Hello, I thought I might throw this out to see everyone's opinion. I would like to one day join one or both of these clubs but is it necessary? I have had an interest in magic since I was 10 but really didn't get seriously into it until about 3 years ago. I have seen some of the benefits to these clubs too and they are very nice. Are most of you members and do some of you just get together with friends and discuss magic rather htan joining a club. I am a part time magician to and with the way I work with my full time job it could be difficult to attend any meetings if I was a member of lets say S.A.M.. Maybe one day I'll join up. What are your feelings on this topic.
Thanks!
For those who believe no explanation is necessary, for those who do not none will suffice.

I would join both just for the magazines alone. I really cannot say there is a preference to either unless you meet guys in your area that are active in a club.

I belong to them both, the M.A.E.S. and Kidabra International.
Visit them both and meet the members. Which ever one you feel the most comfortable then join that one. They do allow guests. Go to each twice. Both are about the same Annual dues to the National organization but local dues could differ. Ask to see their annual schedule. The planners which have one mean they are orgainized and that makes for a better organization, if it fits your needs.

Both are great groups and their magazines are more than worth the price of membership. Most local magic clubs are either a ring of the IBM or an assembly of the SAM, some are both. At one time you could only join the SAM through a local assembly, but that isn't necessary anymore.

I belonged to IBM and SAM for a few years and went to a local SAM meeting a few times when time permitted. The local clubs book some good lecturers and both magazines are good.
How much you interact with members is up to you and them. Clubs are not for everyone but they're worth trying. For my own reasons, location and work hours mostly, I am somewhat of a loner and rarely find the opportunity to discuss magic with anyone. Except here at the Café of course. |

James,
Email me with information about where in the country you are and I'll try to help you get some meeting date information and an invitation to visit a club or two in your area. The magazines are nice. But to me it has been more helpful in the friends I've made. Some I've only known a little over forty years. LOL Go for it! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

OK Den, If you could only join 1 which would it be? I'm leaning towards either SAM or KidAbra Int'l. I have a local SAM/IBM club here in RI. I'm planning on developing Kid shows in the upcoming year (or more).
Thanks, Dave |

If you are going strictly the kid show route, then go with Kidabra as it will give you a jump start.
SAM is in the process of changing editors which will undoubtably mean changes in the format and content of the magazine. I agree with Bob, the people you meet are what makes it all worthwhile. Even if they are old rodeo clowns. Richard

James -
On the local level - If there are "chapters" of the IBM or SAM near where you live, I would recommend visiting both of them before deciding if you wish to join one or both of them. The "personality" of an IBM Ring or a SAM Assembly can vary a great deal depending on the membership...or they can be almost identical depending on the area and the membership. Most local chapters of either organization will permit a couple of visits and afford you the opportunity to make a decision based on how comfortable you feel and how much you enjoy the group. On the International level - Both organizations have a magazine. At the moment the IBM's Linking Ring is better than the SAM's MUM but the MUM has a new editor and everyone is awaiting the February issue to see what sort of change is in store. Both have an annual convention...I believe the IBM's is larger. They both are held in different cities around the country and usually within a week or so of each other in the late June - early July timeframe. If there is a magic shop in your area, you might be able to look at the magazine's of the two organizations before making up your mind. Both organizations are based on fellowship between magicians. Depending on what sort of local group you may have, you may also learn a lot of magic. If you can tell us what city you live in or near, I am sure we can tell you the nearest Ring or Assembly and who to contact. Bill |

LostSoul,
If I had to join One. It would be KIDabra International because I am so involved. Unfortunately, local chapters are not formed yet (Chapter 1, in my area was formed by me) I like SAM 4 in my area, and if KIDabra was not around it would be SAM. Since you are in RI, then SAM would be the choice because there are no local KIDabra Chapters there yet. If I had to choose between two conventions (SAM or KIDabra International) and I must be a member to attend, then KIDabra would win hands down! (This would not apply if one does not do kids shows)

Den,
Thanks for the great input. I've been leaning excatly in that direction (want KIDabra, but SAM is local). Do you have to be a member to go to the KIDabra convention? (I'm really hoping to be able to get there in '06.) Thanks, Dave |

Like SAM and IBM, KIDabra also requires being a member. You can sign up at convention registration. I perfer signing up mid-year so when National dues come, it is one check and when local dues come it is another check, instead of paying all at once.
The best thing about signing up early is getting the magazines.

There are a number of benefits to joining I.B.M., S.A.M., or both.
First, there is the chance to meet other performers. Many local Rings and Assemblies have group stage shows, often around National Magic Week, so it is a chance to perform with other people. You can learn something from every other magician. At worst, they can serve as a bad example. Second, the magazines are good. Third, you can get liability insurance through the S.A.M. I am not sure about I.B.M. You need to show proof of liability insurance to perform in some venues. Finally, if you are contemplating doing any escapes, some of the things that you will find useful can't be obtained unless you can show that you are a law enforcement or security officer, a locksmith, or a magician. You have to be a member of I.B.M. or S.A.M. to prove that you are a magician. Yours, Paul |

I do belive that the IBM has a online Ring that you can join if you can't make to the meetings

I was looking around and IBM requires a two-year 'interest' in magic. Heck, I've been interested since I was old enough to watch, but I don't think that is the interest that counts.
As for SAM, the chapter in my area hasn't updated the web site in months and months, all the contact information is dead. Makes me wonder about the quality of that particular chapter..... |

If you can't find an I.B.M. Ring or S.A.M. Assembly near you, it is possible to start one. We are about to start an I.B.M. Ring in central Maine. All you need is ten I.B.M. members to sign a petition for a Charter and you can form a Ring. The International President is helpful, and your Territorial Vice President will help also. They will help you find I.B.M. or S.A.M. members in your area.
We have not yet had our first meeting, but it looks like this is going to be a success. We have a few web pages up with news of our efforts. I imagine that the new Ring will have its own site not too long after we are granted our Charter. Please see: http://www.memoryelixir.com/IBM_Ring/news.html Yours, Paul |

I'm a member of IBM, thanks to Bob my sponsor:)
They do offer liability insurance, I think it is $110 a year renewable in August of each year (I don't carry it however, I'd rather buy magic tricks). Candini
