Hi everyone,
I just got some Par56 (300 Watt) lights. After a few minutes of being on, they start to give off some smoke. Is this normal? |

If it's just lite wisps of smoke (like from say and extinguished match) then that's fine - they're just burning off the dust and oil that has settled on them. If it's great clouds of smoke then you've got a problem.

Also be aware of the smell. Smoke from an electrical burn has a distinct odor. Most likely you're fine as Dream-Concepts mentioned. I have seen this many times with new fixtures as the finish on them becomes "seasoned". Also if lights have been in storage for awhile it is common for the dust to burn off as well. Keep a careful eye on them, but I wouldn't expect a problem.

I worked in a space last spring that had been dark for 6 months or so before we came in. While focusing lights, several began to smoke quite a bit. Turned out that flies had been living in there the year before because of the warmth and never made it out. When we "poured" them out of the instruments, there was as much as 1/2 a cup in some. It was a smell that will not soon be forgotten!

Burning flies.....ewwwwwwwww!!
I notice some smoke everytime I fire up a new DMX light fixture as well so it's not just PARS. The high heat created by these fixtures tend to burn off any residual from the manufacturing and storage processes. It does go away but it can be quite alarming. I always like to "burn in" new fixtures in a well ventilated area prior to using them at any venue. |

Morgan can attest to the grossness of the problem, as she has also witnessed it. As she said... ick.

Witnessed it?...Heck, I would lay, night after night, in the sawing and look up into the cyc bank of lights and see them littering the gels..ick again!
We just got a few new pars. These came with a ring of styrofoam (I can't spell tonight...) packed behind the lamp. You know how that stuff can chip...one of the pars smoked-up really well this time. I think a bit of the foam did it. But 2 out of 3 times the new ones will smoke.
