Does anyone book a show and swap the fees for a free family vacation like on a cruise or for extravagant hotels or do you book the show and get paid while vacationing.

I don't know about everyone else, but I get paid while vacationing/touring when I'm booked for a show in a location of that sort.
However, I might be mistaking your question. Do you mean- essentially getting booked on a cruise, doing a show, but not getting paid- because you're enjoying the cruise and that counts as your compensation? In my opinion your asking/saying, "Will do magic for food." Or something to that nature. best regards, Matt Tomasko

I did this for Sandals a LONG time ago. Now I travel SO much that when I vacation I want to spend time with the family and NOT worrying about my show.
I think for part timers or amatures it is a fantastic option! Just for me personally I don't do it. I know for tax purposes though you claim the value of what is traded for, just as an aside.

But for the most part I don't eat a clients food before or after a show. But on a cruise it might be OK.... |

Since it is just my wife and I, we make the 'vacation' part of the contract.
When we do resorts, we have them include a room and the use of all the amenities, including meals etc... When asked if we would like a hotel room or extra $, we take the cash and book a hotel that has a pool or other fun things to do. Any time you do a corporate retreat show, ask for a room or cabin at the lodge or resort they are at, on top of your performance fee. I once traded a hotel room for three nights in Iqaluit on Baffin Island in the Arctic for an after dinner show just to visit the place. There are lots of opportunites for 'vacations' in this job. All the best, Rob |

In my youth, I use to book schools where I was going to vacation and they would pay for the show, and I would use that money for the vacation. The cool thing was I came home from vacation with more money than I left.
It was tough booking them and it required advance planning and marketing.

Eric is right on---I did a stint at club med as a holiday- then they re booked me ( and I got paid)
But they do this for your entire family as well--- I remember hanging out on the golf course where the golf instructer had his wife and 3 kids at Club Med for 2 weeks- and he played golf with his wife all day with some Golf instruction as well. Club Med is a good one because most have a "Kids Club" basically Kid minding service Just make sure you check out the Club before you go---some are for singles and some are family resorts-- the single ones are not the best place to take your family |

If you're into that, Club Med is the way to go. We do some occasionally, it's a good get away. All expenses paid. Very nice. Goto http://www.clubmedartists.com. When I go I usually do one show and get a week's stay. It's a good deal, I want a vacation anyway.

Joey,
How do you get away with only doing one show? They tell me in order to stay a week I need to do 6hrs worth of work. Which is practically impossible. |

6 hrs total? Or 6 shows, at 1 hour each?
Why impossible?

It wasnt clarified. Just stated 6 hrs of work. So in 7 days I would have to do, I would assume, 6 shows at an hour each. I wouldnt bring enough material to do 6 different shows. I can hardly see one doing the exact same show for 6 days straight in front of the same audience.

Not sure. I actually book my clubmed shows through a comedy booker out of Stewart, Florida. So I kind of went in as a stand-up comedian and only performed once for about 45 minutes. I performed my normal comedy magic shows. Six different shows sounds quiet a bit harsh. They should pay you if they are going to work you that hard. Did Club Med Artists tell you that? That sounds way too high.

Yes that was the email I got back from them months ago after sending the my package. However, the email did seem kind of generic. This fact is even restated on their website. I replied to their email with my concerns. The reply was a sort of a "take it or leave it" attitude.

I have a friend who is going on a cruise. For the guest talent night he will be doing a short magic show. He has done this before and gotten work out of it. Nothing sells yourself like the cruise director actually seeing your show live.
