Anybody do the thumb tie? Which version?
Is there any footage of Arnold De Biere extant? He and Frank Ducrot were famous for this in their day. I think this would be a great seldom scene street trick. Gazzo could make something hilarious out of this. |

There was something in the dai vernon book of magic but I could not hold the book open, tie my thumbs, and read at the same time so I still don't know how it works.

That was my problem too Frank! LOL
I tried to get Gallo to help me but he was "busy." Anyone else do this trick for paying audiences? How about the Jay Marshall version with pipe cleaners? |

Do several versions of the thumb tie. I doubt if a week goes by wherein I haven’t performed it at least once. I use one of three versions depending on the venue and the act I am doing.
The easiest is one Jim Ryan taught me. It uses just one length of rope (shoelace, string, etc) and a subtlety. This method can be found in a number of books Café member X-treem (posts it the escape section) has it clearly detailed in one of his booklets. I do it most often as an impromptu bit or in a casual show that needs to be lengthened a bit. For my formal stand-up act I perform Irv Weiner’s “Red Tape” (do a search for a discussion. In it my thumbs are taped together with electricians tape. It is a killer technique/gimmick. I also perform the Twist Tie thumb tie in a comedy act. I have done the twist tie thumb tie escape for about 20 years. I bought the original Jaspernese Thumb Tie from Jay Marshall (he called himself "the great Jasper" at one time) back in the 60’s and used the recommended pipe cleaners for over a decade. Later I found wire leaf bag ties and noticed that they worked just as well (better) than the pipe cleaners. I have run across over a dozen magicians that independently discovered the same thing. Still the trick is Jay Marshals and is still sold by Magic Inc. It cost me a buck in 1960 and I think it is still under $10.00 today. Jay developed it in the 1930!!!! Mac King has made that version of the trick very popular. No matter the version the thumb tie packs small and can play very big for you. It is a “personality piece”. That is, it is a trick that allows you to develop and project your personality. Ryan was gruff and blustery, Mac King is light and comedic, Irv Weiner was fun but mysterious (magical). I agree that it can play on the street. It can play anywhere!

Harry's nailed it. The two to look at are Irv Weiner's "Red Tape" and Jay Marshall's "Jaspernese Thumb Tie". Both dirt cheap by today's standards, and I've yet to see methodologies that top them (or are as easily accomplished).
