Normally, Christmas is expected to be hectic. With all of the last minute shopping, the entertaining, and all of the activities with the children in school, there's hardly time to breathe. This year has been no exception, but to top it off, I have 11 gig lined up for the month. When you consider that I'll be out of town for about a week as well, that's a pretty gruelling schedule.
This last weekend, I did two kids parties on the Saturday and they both went exceedingly well. Both shows were for girls. One was turning 7 and the other was turning 8. As a result, I was able to do the same show for both parties But the really cool gig was on Sunday. A huge dental lab had booked me to perform at their annual staff Christmas party. There were about 400 people in attendance, only about 30 of which were kids. Talk about a mixed age group! I checked out the venue in advance to ensure I knew what the room was like, the size of my stage and the type of sound system that would be available. Then I designed my show around those parameters. The show was fantastic! We had children and adults coming up as volunteers, and the entire room was yelling out the magic words. Even the wait staff came in to watch the show. Afterwards, I must have handed out over 50 business cards, with many of them wanting to book me for an event of their own. One of the real hits in the show was the Balloon Swords Through Head. I asked for a brave child to come up to help out in a very dangerous effect. I picked a fairly confident looking boy who was about 12 years old. When he came up on stage, I hammed it up with him for a bit and then told him what we were about to do. I showed him a large black box with several holes running through it. I told him we were going to put the box on his head and then we were going to thrust these deadly sharp daggers through the box. The daggers would pierce his head from every angle, but leave him completely unharmed. (The daggers I displayed were actually very dangerous looking daggers that I have from an actual dagger head chest. However, I didn't want to use the regular dagger head chest because of the fact there were some very young kids in the audience). This said, the box went on his head and he held it in position. As soon as the box was on, I told the audience that they had to be really quiet because immense concentration was necessary to ensure that I didn't accidentally impale the volunteer. As I was saying this though, I very openly and sneakily came out with nine balloon swords instead. I immediately began thrusting the "deadly" swords through the volunteer's head, all the while hamming it up about the danger and the blood. The crowd was rolling in the aisles with laughter as this was happening. Then, after all the swords were in, I addressed the audience saying that many people think this is simply a trick and that I must be using trick swords. So, to prove that the swords really did go through the volunteer's head, I opened the front door of the box. Huge gasps were heard throughout the room as they started to realize that the head was no longer there! I pretended that I didn't notice this for a few seconds and then acted completely shocked as I quickly closed the front door and pulled out all the swords, all the time yelling out "Call 911!" and "Is there a doctor in the house!". After the swords were removed, the box came off the volunteer's unharmed head, and he received a huge round of applause. The balloon swords were handed out to the kids as souvenirs. I had routined this effect 4 months ago, but this was the first time I had ever performed it. Needless to say, the effect has proven itself and has found a new home in my regular show. Oh well, now I have to pack everything away and get ready for next weekend! Kent

That's hilarious. Great job Kent!
Did you get any pictures of the show? I'd love to see some. Brian |
