I have begun posting a searchable index to Rice's Encyclopedia of Silk Magic on my site for the purpose of identifying inventors of silk effects or silk gimmicks as noted by Harold Rice in the work. It occurred to me, as I began working my way through volume 1, that perhaps this has already been done and I am wasting my time. If anyone knows of a searchable index listing inventors in the Rice Encyclopedia, please let me know. I know that at one time a CD version of the Encyclopedia was claimed to be available, but all references to it indicated that it consisted of images of the hand drawn pages, and therefore would not be searchable by computer.
My reason for needing such an index is to assist magic authors in giving credit for their adaptations of earlier creations. When my work is complete, I will provide an Excel file to all magic authors who request it. Thanks for any help you can give me in determining if a prior searchable index already exists or not.

Good morning Spellbinder,
Don't let anyone talk you out of the fine project you have started. July 1981, Harold Rice published an index to Vol 1-3. It was not as comprehensive as what you are doing. Give a call or email and I'll tell you what I know about it. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

The index is currently available from Rice's Silk King Studios, Ruth Crone will be glad to supply.

Thanks for the encouragement. I've ordered the index, but I have a feeling it doesn't focus on the inventors as much as I need it to for the purpose of giving credits.
I completed the work on Volume 1 today. Jim Gerrish has promised to lend a hand with Volume 2, so I'll go on to Volume 3. After the Rice Volumes, I intend to go through the Rope Encyclopedia scrounging for names.

I received the Rice Encyclopedia of Magic Index to volumes 1-3 and found that it only lists inventors if the inventor's name is part of the name of the effect, such as "Abbott's Silk Production Box." The "Temple Screen" is listed, but with no connection to U.F. Grant, whom we all (I hope!) know to be its inventor.
So my Inventor's index work continues, knowing that it will be of value for the purpose of crediting inventors by magic authors.

The Rice Encyclopedia Inventor's Index is now complete through Volumes 1-3. It will be on-line on my site through the end of the year, and then it will make way for more inventor's indices from other sources, but it will be available to anyone who requests it as an Excel file, which makes it not only searchable, but sortable, as well.

Spellbinder,
Please accept our thanks again. The Excel file makes it easy for us to make our own notes and connections too. Please put me on the list requesting the index file. Dear Spellbinder,
Many thanks for the work you have done to make Dad's wonderful Encyclopedia of Silk Magic even more valuable. In this era of "creative borrowing" of magic effects, designs, and concepts, it is such a pleasure to see credit given to inventors of original magic effects. Your willingness to make this unique searchable index available to the magic community without cost is truly unique. I hope one of the magic periodicals writes about the availability of your work, free of charge :>) Please put me on the list to receive the index file. Happy New Year Spellbinder! |

Too Late Ruth! I've enjoyed it the most first! LOL
It is a wonderful piece of work about a wonderful piece of work. Immediately I printed out each volume's references and put them inside the book covers of the Rice Silk Encyclopedias. Volume 2 has aways been my favorite. It does show some wear. Perhaps being able to go to the right pages immediately might extend its life another 39 years. I've only had it since 1966! There are Post-its all through it that replaced the yellowed index cards I started with (and still carry). (Think of index cards as Bubba's palm pal. The batteries never go dead.) Spellbinder, we owe you! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

I'll surrender to the lady! She is irreplaceable as a friend. Ruth has no idea how much I enjoyed her father's friendship and advice. Spellbinder made no small sacrifice to compile this index. One of the nicest things about this business is that you are surrounded by great people.
Thank you. Bob Magic By Sander |
