I was curious what Café readers thought about placement on a web page.

Does a vertical list of page link buttons down the side look better than a horizontal list across the top?
Is the left or right side more visually appealing or logical?

What pleases your eye?

If the menu is fairly short I prefer buttons across the top.

For larger menu's I don't mind vertical menu's down the left side.

If the menu is really big, a drop down menu is nice and can be almost any where near the top.

I like easy navigation so I like text links at the bottom of pages as well as a site map for larger sites.

What pleases my eye on a page really depends on the whole layout of the page.
Gigantic, graphic buttons don't appeal to me.

Check out the book "Don't Make Me Think" about website design. He has some great ideas concerning menu layouts.

In web design, coding is key. Make sure your button coding has keywords in it and appears near the top of the code. This ensures higher search engine placement!

Where can I find the book "Don't make me think"?

And, Xavier, can you explain your comment in more detail?

Thanks

Simon

I fully agree! I bought it some years back and found it very useful.
