There are plenty of post on this so do a search.
Here are few quick thoughts of guys I know and respect. They all make good products at a fair prices. Bill Smith, Bill Schmeelk (Wellington), George Kimmery (Chalet), Craig Dickens. Of course, don't overlook John Gaughan or Alan Zagorsky at Owens Magic. Depending what you want built they will be right in the ballpark. Hope that helps. Richard

For my money it doesn't get any better than Jack Murray. He can take any design and make it a reality. Everything he suggest that might improve the design is always something worth seriously considering. He's easy to work with and knows his stuff.

A friend of mine had an Origami built by Murray. He told me that the mirror fell off, and one of the legs broke off while the girl was inside.
I have seen some early Chalet stuff that was kind of rough, but the recent work seems to be very good quality at good prices. His sub trunk is one of the best deals in magic. Owens, of course, is good quality, but all the stuff I've seen is pretty heavy compared to others (but strongly constructed.) Wellington makes excellent quality props, but can be a bit pricey. |

Mr. Rivers, I built that Origami over 6 years ago when I first started out and BEFORE I knew it was proprietary. I was told that in fact it was "public Domain by someone who should have known, but they were wrong. What ever problems your "friend" had, weren't brought to my attention untill SIX months after in his possesion. I offered to repair it for FREE, but he wanted his money back!!! VERY unreasonable!!
NO other such problems have occurred in the last 6 years to my knowlege, because I address ALL issues immediately WHEN I AM TOLD. I hope this will set the record straight, as I will not respond further to an issue over 6 years old, but all you need do is "search" here on the Café' to see what my clients feel about my work. THAT WAS THEN, THIS IS NOW. Jack

I'm not trying to start a fight, just sharing what I know. You have a right to respond, Jack, as you did. That's what this forum is about.

Jack I believe you make quality products and 6 years is a long time if there is a problem still that problem obviously did not get resolved but it is not your fault and shouldn't worry about someone holding a grudge. I've heard nothing but good about your products and although you shouldn't have built and sold an origami don't worry about it it was so long ago. Plus isn't this about quality illusion builder not about badly built origamis from 6 years ago? Jack is a good builder and you will find his products to serve you well I'm sure. it just depends on your budget and effects you are looking for.... if you are looking for a custom job which is highly mechanical Splashes is probably the best. if you are looking for a standard prop go to pretty much anyone. and if you are looking for a product like Jack's go to him... it all depends on what you want, the type of look you want, and the $ you have to spend... Owens, Wellington, bill Smith, Dream Illusions, Splashes, are among the best.

Jack, I'm afraid you will never have a job in politics; you are just too honest. You admit that you built an Oragami, based on the information you were given saying it was public domain. You admit that was wrong and haven't built one since. Good for you. You hear about problems and offer to fix them. That is the sort of customer service that there isn't enough of in this world. Luckily, I think your reputation will remain a good, strong one, just based on the number of "happy customers" I have heard of and from. So, onward and upward, Jack. Now let's get back to the topic at hand.

Try not to let it get to you Jack. You have far more supporters here who have complimented your work and your work ethics. Just my opinion but come on Rory two posts??
I think you're simply out of line here. Learn to read the what the thread is all about before you post. You showed your *** Back on topic.. I've been to Jacks shop and have seen first hand his workmanship. I think it's outstanding and you can not beat his prices. I own illusions from nearly every major builder. We'll be hearing more about Jack and his work in the future I'm sure! |

Wow,
I just stumbled onto this post and got really fired up. Find a magician, builder, firefighter, car dealer or anyone else that hasn't screwed up before! Six years ago? Wow, some people have nerve! I can't believe that a 6 year old project is even being brought up in this forum. I can tell you from first hand knowlege that Jack is a top notch builder and a stand up guy. I have said it in other posts before, I'm a client for life with Dream Illusions. So he made a mistake. Find someone who hasn't. He admited it and moved on, so should everyone else. Isn't this suppose to be magicians helping magicians like he said? Blow him off Jack, you've got my business! Keith

I own illusions from Owen, Wellington, and Chalet. They all make beautiful long lasting props that work well and stand up to hard trouping. I must say after recently purchasing an illusion from Jack there is no doubt that he fits in with this prestigious group. Not only does he make high quality illusions, but he stands behind them and has added some of the most original quick assembling features I have ever seen. I admire a man who learns from his mistake and then makes dramatic improvements. Jack is a man of integrity that delivers impressive quality props that are appreciated by working professionals.

To get back on the original topic, I've owned illusions by Owens, Bill Smith and Chalet. They all were excellent and well built. When buying illusions go for the best. There is nothing worse than a home made looking illusion.

I have illusions built by Alcorn, Chalet, Owen, Summers, Wellington and Woodbury. All have served me well. As far as who is the best I guess that depends on your point of view. As far as Jack Murray is concerned, I have only heard good things about him. If I find myself needing something in the future I would consider him. Now to address Rory Diamond I don't know too many illusionest that "rehearse with it one or two times, and then do a show with it five months later. Now they realize there is a problem,.."

Throwing my two cents out there, I too have been into Jacks shop and own one of his Illusions. It is a fantastic prop, and even exceeding his craftsmanship is his hospitality and customer appreciation. I know I wasn't his biggest project at the time and as he works on another current project in his full schedule, he never fails to make me feel like his most important customer with his constant updates and contact. Not only is he a great builder but a great person and I look forward to future projects. After talking with him and hearing about his plans (no pun intended), I am positive that we will see great things from Dream Illusions very soon.

I'm sorry to get back into this but the "facts" that are being presented here....give me a break. I DID NOT AT ANY TIME "refuse" to work with the buyer in regards to addressing the problems until his attorney sent me a letter DEMANDING a refund. Until then I responded to ALL emails and phone calls, but I never respond well to threats made by attorneys.
I already explained I built the Origami out of ignorance! Why not ask your friend Rory, why he, a seasoned professional, ordered an Origami in the first place. Why is your post all about me? Doesn't he share some responsibility as well. No I guess not because it's much easier to come here and register with the expressed purpose to "out" me. I have already told many magicians of my mistake. Shall we go back 6 years into your life to see what mistakes you made back then. You can see by the support here from clients who have purchased from me since the "O", I build a quality prop, return all messages and care about my work. Why don't you admit you are wrong about me, have a merry Christmas, and leave it the h--- alone. Jack

I would like to add my two cents...Jack Murray provides an excellent product at a good price. The fact that he has admitted to making an origami six years ago is proof of his character. How many Café members who perform an effect poorly apologize to thier audeneces six years later...I doubt that there are many who would admit performing poorly. I agree with Steve...I would like all users to have a Profile.

I don't believe that any of us are the same performers/builders/people that we were 6 years ago. I know personally 6 years ago I was still a hobbyist magician and had no experience whatsoever with illusions other than seeing them on TV. I think it's time for someone to post a new topic on something else.
