Any recommendations for books of tricks/effects from a shuffled deck in use? ie, not a stack or gaff in sight?
Cheers Roger |

Almost every good book could fit the bill. Any of the Darwin Ortiz's books, Guy Hollingworth, Dai Vernon, James Swain, Ken Krenzel, Paul Cummins (of course since the FASDIU is his trademark) to name some of the ones who come first in mind...

I'm interested in finding material along the same lines, but I would like to add to the criteria that the effects are also "in the hands". Perhaps I'm asking too much, or perhaps I should check out the FASDIU books before even asking this question at all, but I simply have little to no use for tricks which require stacks, set-ups, gaffs, or tables.
And Roger for what its worth, I would not go with the Hollingworth book based on your criteria. He has one chapter that requires you to be wearing a blazer/jacket; another chapter where all the effects require paper clips; another chapter where you must be performing in a parlor setting, etc. Not exactly fasdiu. Don't get me wrong, I love reading Hollingworth's book and there are certainly some really good routines in there. But I suspect that there has rarely been a book so hyped in the world of magic that has so little real world usable material. |

Harry Lorayne has written countless books that feature first-class card routines that can be accomplished with "a shuffled deck in use." These books include Close-Up Card Magic, Decksterity, Rim Shots, Quantum Leaps, Personal Collection, etc. Lorayne will even teach you how to accomplish a set-up effect from a shuffled deck.
I highly recommend his work. Joe Z.

Dear Mr. Fantasy by John Bannon has quite a few tricks and routines your should look into. Additionally, his Smoke & Mirrors book is back in print so RUN and get it.
After that, I recommend the FASDIU books as well as Close-Up Card Magic. -Carlos

I second the John Bannon recommendation. The longer Dear Mr. Fantasy sinks in, the more appreciative I am of it. It's not a very big book, but everything is of stunningly high quality. And most of the effects and routines are FASDIU.
Also, most of the effects in Card College are FASDIU. Don't neglect Card College's effects, just because of the instructional nature of those volumes. They are superb. |

Me too. the bannon book is a gem. And I even knew almost all the tricks already.
That says a lot for a book full of stuff I already knew. Well worth the money. I did not know the peek, nor did I know the specky cuts the aces. Love them both. And boy do they go well together as described by Mr. Bannon.

I'm an unabashed fan of Paul Cummins FASDIU booklets. The first is maybe my favorite of the two, but my two favorite tricks of the series are in the second book.
If you haven't got them you should, because they are among the very few books DEVOTED to impromptu card magic to exclusion of other types of effects. There are lots of books which have some great impromptu card magic in them but these books are "must have". I say this because of two important points: Paul is a full time pro and all the material is stuff he uses all the time. AND Paul has a real talent for construction. He can take a simple thing like "The Biddle Trick" or the "Slop Shuffle Triumph" and elevate it to a minor work of art. Triumph is a particular favorite of mine and I have some VERY good work on the plot, only a fraction of which as been published. That said, Paul's "Personal Slop" is among the best handlings of the effect EVER put in print, and hands down the best version using the slop shuffle. |

Paul's FASDIU notes belong in every serious card worker's library. I'm sure people must get sick of me saying it (because I say it just about every time they're mentioned), but if you mastered half of the material spread across those two volumes, you'd have as solid a professional repertoire as just about anyone working today. You'd be able to perform in just about any conditions, for just about any number of people, and all you'd need to do it is an ordinary pack of cards.
In addition to Paul's FASDIU notes, his Fusillade notes (written with Doc Eason) are also excellent. It's their treatise on the multiple selection effect. It greatly expands Paul's previous essay on the subject contained in his first set of notes. The multiple selection routine, of course, can be done FASDIU. As a final note, don't discount all tricks that use a set-up. A lot of them are really practical if you can figure out a way to get into the set-up during a previous effect. "Dear Mr. Fantasy" has a great example of that in one of the chapters. One of the benefits of this approach is that it really disguises the use of a stack.

It's been said already but most of Harry Lorayne's stuff is FASDIU or minimal setup. His first book is on most peoples short list of best ever card magic.

I am sad to hear that Paul Cummins passed away last year.
Can anyone suggest how to obtain his FASDIU 1 book? I looked at his website, but it looks like the ordering page has been removed. I presume this is because his family don't want to process orders for his products. I looked on the Lybrary website, but can't find it listed there. Actually what I am specifically interested in is "Personal Slop" - his Slop Shuffle version of Triumph. I have read many comments on the Café that if you want to do a SS Triumph, Paul's is the one. Thanks Nick PS. I believe Personal Slop is different from his table sloppy shuffle in True Triumph |

Thanks for your reply Harry.
I already have The Magic Book and Close Up Card Magic. I was actually asking about a specific book by Paul Cummins. I'll post a separate thread to be clearer |
