No one can tell you what illusion to buy. It is your six thousand dollars.
Maverick could be a guy/girl, and the performance style is not known, as well as location, what are your business plans for use of illusion, etc. There is a lot to consider when buying an illusion. A Chair suspension might do well in a comedian presentation. What is ist you want to do Instantly appear, float a person or assistant, levitate someone, vanish an elephant, etc. the questions are limitless.

I was just being curious as to what illusions people have bought or would buy or would recommend regardless of circumstance of performance. !! just a general enquiry..as there are so many types of illusions out there.
I am about one illusion short of completing my act and just wanted some ideas to bounce off. Please don't reply saying I should do a search as this board has thousands of posts and would be a huge tedious task !! I just wanted peoples opinions..... that's all. |

So sounds like you already have some illusions, That would be a great place to start, what do you have right now? what do you like? whats your style? what venues are you working? How many assistants are you working with? and so on...
I think it is a valid question to ask others if you are more specific say: "I am going to do a bunch of fair shows this summer and all I have right now is a Sub Trunk, Any recomendations for other good illusions for fairs?" and then someone that has done fairs can say: "yeah with fairs you will be doing shows that often have bad angles and you will have to set up in front of your crowd sometimes. you will also obviously be traveling a lot with your props so you will want something very prtable." In this case my recomendation would be a Chalet Cube Zag, This has been one of our best investments ($3500) because it packs into our car and can be assibled infront of your audience and done on any stage or complety surounded. not to mention it is a great trick!!!! anyhow give us a little more direction and I am sure you will get some great sugestions. best of luck B

I think it depends upon what you already have. It also depends greatly upon your typical performing conditions.
I'd get something that can be almost universally used, meaning surrounded, and with no preload/unload requirements. I'd also consider something that is high off the ground, so it would be visible if you are doing a floor show with many deep rows of chairs. Some that might fit the bill is the ever-popular Zig Zag, Cutting in 6ths, and Modern Art. These all are similar effects, so I'd only get one of 'em. Next I'd look at a Doll's House or Temple of Benares. And you gotta have a headchopper. That should kill your six grand. |

Illusions I have at the moment are: Sub trunk, interlude, Asrah, snow, Rand woodbury's illusion done with silouette (cant remember proper name) and an artist dream type illusion that I created and built myself. All of the illusions apart from artists dream can be done pretty much anywhere.
I was thinking of maybe an escape type trick i.e milk/oil can or the Jam illusion with 2 girl production or even the crusher from magic makers !! so many to choose from. Im also looking of a good way to produce an assistant at the end of my dove act. The gemini cage is no longer available, but anyone know of another idea ? Tilford makes one that's like a gemini but not sure if it would be all its cracked up to be as have heard mixed thoughts on his illusions. any help guys??? |

Even Asrah ?? You must have a very good model. :kewl: |

I bought the form and made the couch myself. Asrah does not always require rigging.

Wow,
I see you're from U.K There are not many illusion workers left here. you must be doing well then. Let me know when your next public show is on and I'll be on the front row. No matter what corner of U.K that is, I'll be there. :kewl: |

Don't spend your money on a new illusion instead buy a "REAL" interlude from John Gaughan !!!!

I'm 24 and been doing magic for about 8 to 9 years.
I originally posted just to get some advice as to what illusions people think are good. Maybe someone will actually post some of the illusions they like and join the couple of people who did just give me their opinions on illusions. |

Mavrick..
There are some really cool effects on the market but I am curious. How could you expect others on this board especialy the seasoned pros to offer you guidance if you show a lack of respect for other opinons or their creativity? Why would anyone share with you the cutting edge effects when you've given the impression you'll build YOUR VERSION? And think that's OK!!?? You are right! There are others being made we call that "ripped-off" And I don't like it one bit.. they look like garbadge and they make us all look bad! Can I ask WHAT is different about your Interlude? Is it different in that.. a person isn't coming through your belly? Maybe an object or animal? Cool!! yes / no? (Then again objects and animals have already been used.) Is it different in that you don't do the secrect "move".. you have another extra special way to have the person pass by you???? yes/ no?? OR maybe yours is different because you don't use a cabinet or prop that resembels Johnny's artistic design of his Interlude cabinet.. with your legs and head showing and your arms outstreached? Yours looks totaly different??Maybe you don't use a cabinet!! Yes / No? If you can say yes to any of the above I appaude you!... but then why even bother calling your effect an Interlude? Bragging rights?? Do you think the professional who has paid $7,000.00 for the performing rights to do Interlude appreciates someone not getting permission to perform it and knocks one out at home? It would be like performing a play with out getting permission from the playwright.. telling him oh I changed the names.. it's different!! It's my version!! Call it something else! Then you won't be infringing on Jim's Title and you won't get people crawling down your throat. You'll find as you turn Pro that Most professionals respect and protect the inventers..because THEY make US look good. No need to get defensive when somone is protecting the thinkers in our art.Because you are going to see a lot of it! If "your version" is truly different you have nothing to be concerned about.. State the facts instead of plowing over people and being rude. You certainly won't gain the respect or find the help you seek. |

Maverick23 my friend
Listen and listen carefully, don't knock off any ones ideas or build / perform something that you have no right to. DreamConcepts is total right in what he said, Trust me you couldn't possibly have the key details in the proper version of the interlude. If you still think you have got it right post a picture and I will pull it to bits!! Dare YOU!!! Think on Maverick should I come and see you perform and then rip off your act? How would you feel if I did? Why the illusionist market is dead in the UK is beacause magicains use rip off illusions and then perform them badly without CARE! To answer your question go to a illusion builder like Bill Smith, Splash, or Dream Concepts and spend your money on illusions you should be performing and you have the right too. Just one more question my friend Maverick did you buy any of your illusions from Illusions Plus in Dorset UK All the Best Merry Christmas and have a lot of fun but use your ideas! JA |

I don't know about that but the main culprit is television. Most of the theatres in UK went downhill after 1960's (thanks to television). and with that down came most of the major illusion acts. It recovered a bit on TV but went down again. :kewl: |

I think we will know if maverick is for real if he puts videos of him up but until then,
they thought it was impossible until they met me.
theres no reality in magic did the magician come before the assistant or the other way around. |
maverick23 New user 49 Posts |
I will not be putting videos of my act on a message board as I have no need to prove myself. Sorry if it sounds a trifle arrogant but hey... that's life. Also the use of the term 'form' as regards to asrah is a very common one as it refers to the wire 'Form' of the person gaff !!
jamieallan however you need to realise that as soon as magicians or actually infact anyone that produces something that goes in to the public domain, it will get copied or added to or modified etc... that's just what happens. My conclusion is that if you don't want to get ripped off then don't release anything !!!!!!!! One last thing I simply called it interlude so you guys know what the effect is. Surely I can actually say the words without getting arrested right??? so come on guys take a chill pill !!!! |

Oh dear, dear me. No wonder the art of illusion is dying.
I'll never forget seeing Illusions Plus' "version" of Origami... No doubt they too thought they had all of Jim and John's nuances down pat. I shudder at the thought. |
