I have several of Andrew Mayne's books and DVDs, so I'd have to go back to find the banme of the effect and the name of the source, but I know they are both his, but he presents 2 methods to get similar effects.
One of them involves using a sharpened pencil in an envelope, and two envelopes with pieces of drinking straw in them. The envelopes are mixed up and the spectator is asked to choose one. You stab yourself with it and it turns out to be a straw. The envelopes are mixed again and they are asked to choose again. This time, you stab them and it too is a straw. The thrid evenvelope is torn open to reveal the pencil. This one can fit in your back pocket, and the working method is totally safe. For those who do cigarette magic, he's also got a rotuine where by you give a spectator a bunch of cigaretes and exlopsive loads and have them put the loads into the cigs. You then give them one cig with the instructions not to load it, but merely to mix it in among the others. You then proceed to light the cigs and put them in an ash tray. The final cig is lit and you puff on it a bit, when all the sudden the ones in the ashtray start to explode and the one you have is safe. He's also got a water and vodak effect, but it's not practical for the street as it requires 10 shot glasses, but the basic effect is 9 glasses are filled with water and one with vodka and you are able to correctly identify the vodka glass. Hope that helps with some safer, alternate ideas.

A lot of magicians seem to be down on this effect. I don't deny that it can cause pain, that other safe tricks can be just as entertaining, and so on. But I'm surprised that so many people say "don't do it," instad of saying "be careful if you do it." Audiences love the trick so I'd imagine people will always do it.

This is a great effect but has a high risk I would think...but you know what they say...with no risk no reward
