How often should one replace the strings?

I don't play bass but living, eating, sleeping and touring with my bass player has given me a little knowledge.
Bass strings can be rather pricey - some players actually boil the strings to add an extra amount of time to their life and then simply restring. I personally feel this leaves the bass sounding somewhat fuzzy and doesn't allow for the proper dynamic needed between lead, rhythm and bass. I would recommend changing your strings at a minimum of 3-4 times a year (assuming you play very much that is) Anyway....anyone who actually plays bass and knows what their talkin' 'bout wanna help me out! Hope that helps, L. |

I think this depends on the sound / performance you are looking for, and how often you play. I played electric bass for years and usually only changed them once a year if that. Bass strings rarely break unless you are doing a lot of slap and pop, when usually your top (G) string will break.
On a related note, any guitar string but bass strings in particular will last longer if you make sure your hands are completely clean before playing (no grease off a plate of wings, for example). The dirt gets into the ridges and they wear out faster. -bigwolf {*}

I don't play bass but I do play electric guitar. I can tell when my strings need replacing by the way they look, the way they sound, and the way they feel. They get very dirty and the coating wears off on the most used areas. The tone seems to die sooner and they just don't feel as responsive. Hard to explain, but where I was going with all this rambling is to suggest the use of Elixir strings. http://www.elixirstrings.com
They cost about twice as much but they last more than twice as long. Great strings! |

I'd have to second the use of Elixir strings!

Thanks everybody! I've been playing just over a year and have never replaced the strings. I'm going to as soon as I can.
