I've set up a bullet catch using "BANG" flag guns. Now the question is: Do I catch the flag in my mouth or do I set up Rocky Raccoon to do it? Maybe have it blow his tail off? Also, is this going to be okay for kid shows? Not sure how some parents may take the idea of a gun, even one so innocuous as these. Maybe some of you that are parents could help as I'm only an over-indulgent uncle.
Thanks in advance for insights. Sammy the Kid |

I don't think the gun issue would be a problem with parents, because you'd have to show it was a flag "bang" gun before loading it for the "bullet catch" effect anyway. In other words, shoot the Bang gun to show the flag. Roll it up and put it back in place, then when you do the bullet catch trick, the gun swings open and there is nothing inside. Instead, the flag shoots out of your mouth and unrolls. You could get that effect with a small piece of plastic (PVC?) tube in your mouth which contains the flag rolled around a spring. Puff the flag out of the tube so the spring straightens out and the flag unrolls from it.
A good lead-in to this would be the invisible gun used in "The Shooting Card" trick.

From one cowboy to another...
Use care when presenting a gun (prop or real) in front of children. Certain circumstances may permit it. Others may not. My personal guideline has always been to talk to the patron. Clear it ahead of time. Then remember, that once cleared, no matter what audiance, someone WILL have ill feelings stirred up in them. You need to dispell that by your personality. I have only had one experiance that was negative, it was enough for me to reflect upon it and make these determinations. As far as blowing the tail off of RR, again pick your audiance well. Some people may not find that humorous at all. Having said that, one of my favorite things to do is stuff my gun inside a rubber chicken. I think you could really be onto something funny given the flag bang gun. I would present it out of my own mouth.. or maybe an assistant.

The bang flag guns I have a very obviously toys. They look almost like toy pirate pistols (if only I could get the flag loaded in my '51 Colt Navy). My idea is to have Rocky do a card location ala shimmed card with m****t nose, followed by the flag catch (maybe have his tail fall off exposing the flag from the posterior, yeah I know I'm a little sick like that), and finish up with the asrah levitation. Maybe this is a better idea for my more grown up shows. I gotta admit, Diamond Jim, I use the "How I Met My Wife" routine you submitted to Visions online magazine. It's a goodun, pard!

I really like your bang gun idea, and if you do ever figure out how to get the flag loaded in your Navy Colt.. let me know. I have been working on loading one in my Buntline for year with out much sucess.
I'm glad you like my groaner! I have never failed to get a good reaction, but then us Cowboy can pull of a bit more than others sometime. I suppose it depends on your characters IQ. Mine is just above a houseplant! I would still be carful with the guns.. toys or not. I have to tell you that I've had a heck of a lot of fun with a ruber chicken stuffed on the end of my Buntline. Boy that one is loaded! But animal activists sure go bezerk! If you want I will happily share my negative experiance with you in a PM, but not here in an open forum. It's not apprapo for everyone to know about it. Keep me posted as to how it goes..

Sammy,
I presently do an effect in my kid shows (in all my shows for that matter), where someone "shoots" Rockys tail off. I also though if I should use a real "fake gun" and decided to have the kid simply make a "finger gun" and yell bang! I have been very happy with the results and the kids laugh. After he loses his tail he gets upset and jumps at the child to "attack" him. Then the tail reappears on his butt. (one tail is pushed into a hole in his butt, and the fake (well I guess all of his tails are fake since hes fake...never mind )is held on by velcro for the first part of the routine and then is just clipped between my fingers when the child shoots at him. Only thing to be carefull with is, if anyone handles Rocky before the tail gag, they could pull the tail off. I kind of over elaborated there, hope it helps tho.... Scott |
