I perform Pinnacle but not Rhing Thing....I've seen a demo of Rhing Thing done by a hobbyist. I'm not sure if it's the full routine...but if it is, Pinnacle is better in terms of the routine...it penetrates the band one at a time, and is released from the band one at a time too

Bringing this back to the top as I am very interested in the state of the dvd. The manuscript is incredible in terms of explanation and pictures. But with rubberband effects, its often hard to tell what goes where in a picture. I think the dvd, along with the manuscript, would be the best way to learn this effect.

Al Angelo performed Found Link for me a couple months ago and I was floored. When I found out basically how it was done, it has been on my purchase list ever since. Since then, I have heard great things about both Found Link and Rhing Thing. I agree that Mendoza's routine and Pinnacle should be done together. All I know is the two routines were amazing to me when I saw them, so definitely check those two out.

I'm not a fan of the way pinnacle looks, just because there are so many tight movements, but the final unlink is cool.
I sent him a PM about the DVD back in March and never heard back, but I'd very much like to get a copy. |

I really enjoy my Pinnacle DVD. I have not viewed Rhing Thing, but I love Pinnacle.

I would go with Pinnacle - but check out Michael Ammars thoughts on the effect, and also the routine in Richards Almanac - its that routine that started me off - and which I do all the time

Personally, I start with the first phase of Pinnacle and go into Rhing Thing. They are really made for each other. Rhing Thing provides the convincing display of the ring on the rubber band. In the Pinnacle DVD, this type of display required a duplicate from what I remember.
I'm thankful for all the Magicians that put in the time to develop these effects and moves, and then share them so I can develop my own routine with bits and pieces from everything that is good and well thought out. I usually don't look at these things as "this one or that one" but rather "what's great about these effects, and how can I incorporate this thinking to my own presentation". Steve |

I looked at both, but ended up going with Pinnacle because it was available with a DVD instructional video. I've been VERY disappointed in text descriptions in a lot of books and pamphlets lately...and I really can't imagine learning a complex series of digital manipulations from a written instruction. Pinnacle, broken down into 4 sections, was enough of a challenge for me!
I will say, however, that once I got over the intimidation of the entire routine I have been able to master the first 3 sections pretty well and am working on the 4th and final. Okay, "master" may be a bit strong, but you get the idea. Rhing Thing certainly looks interesting and I agree it looks like a natural tie-in with Pinnacle, but I'm gonna wait for the DVD. I'm off text instructions as a learning tool for specific manipulation techniques. For general routines and concepts--text may still be the best way to convey. But to learn intricate moves, I'm no longer willing to rely on poorly written descriptions and marginal illustrations on photocopied paper. Not that Rhing Thing is like this...I haven't seen it. But others are and I'm tired of pulling what little hair I have out in frustration. At my age, I have a host of opportunities to frustrate myself less expensively. BooRadley |

BOO My friend I hear what you are saying about a dvd vs written material. There are many rubberband effects that complement each other .....

Much appreciated...you truly are the man...or shall I say, the Godfather. As I mentioned in another post, I got Troy Hooser's Charming Chinese Challenge and found the text instructions--at least part of them--indecipherable. Probably have to spring for the video which is frustrating. And expensive.
I have read numerous instructions for "Crazy Man's Handcuffs" and was never really sure I was doing it properly--I wasn't. Saw an Ammar video on ebay for just a couple bucks and picked it up. I INSTANTLY saw how to do it properly For me, text works great for discussing routines and overall concepts--broad picture stuff. But for detailed manipulation instruction, I think video makes for far shorter work. And bear in mind, I make a good portion of my living writing for newspapers, publicity releases, promotional copy and that sort of thing. I truly do appreciate the written word. The various forms of communication have their inherint strengths and weaknesses. Several months ago, the originator of this effect claimed the video was basically ready to go...I'm just curious why it's taking so long. Some of the instructional videos I've bought look like they were shot in an hour, copied in a day and thrown onto the market for sale. I'm looking forward to seeing this when and if it ever comes out. BooRadley |
