What are some famous plays and novels that feature theatrical magic and/or close-up magic as a major or minor plot device?

Carter Beats the Devil is the first one to come to mind. Also, The Prestige. Shadowland (Peter Straub?).

Though it hardly qualifies as "famous", there's The Vanished Man by Jeffery Deaver. It's a decent novel.

You might enjoy The Sunlight Dialogues by John Gardner and The Deptford Trilogy by Robertson Davies. World of Wonders, the third book of The Deptford Trilogy, was adapted for the stage and performed at the Stratford Festival in Ontario perhaps fifteen years ago. The production used quite a bit of stage magic.

But in Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, it's real magic, which is why I didn't raise this wonderful book.

I think there have been several threads on this subject !
Several magicians have featured as heros in crime novels. Too many to list. |
