Danny:This is amazing! I was driving home from my Sunday gig tonight.I had a really great 'tip' night. However,I also had an extremely active night in requests for my biz card.
I was seriously (in my mind) once again weighing things(tips vs bookings) and smiling and, thinking;hey the tips are nice, but I'll take a potential booking any day over a tip.You are right on! Rich |

Yeah I just think that the amount of money I make that night in tips reflects how good I did.
Thanks for all the great advice. Shane |

Without knowing the venue it's hard to know exactly why tips don't happen. There have been lots of good answers about why already posted, but without visiting and seeing your environment we're all just kinda guessing here...
I always assume that people don't know how to react to a close up magician. They don't know if they are supposed to clap, or if tipping is expected, or if you are ALLOWED to take tips. So the best thing you can do is to help them by letting them know what the expectations are in a subtle and polite way. Perhaps you could put a brandy snifter near the cash register alongside a publicity style photo with your name on it: “Presenting magic by Shane” People know what that sort of glass is for and preloading it with a couple of ones and fives could help to get things going. The idea of telling them that you can do “one more trick” before you have to go, is a solid way to ensure that if someone is going to tip you that they have time to do so before you are ready to leave. That way you avoid the awkward moment of standing there with nothing to say while someone digs out a bill from their wallet. You might also try using the script for the coin from bill effect that's posted on my website. The script is in the free area called Sessions. You can use it to "get the money on the table". Go here http://home.comcast.net/~wsduncaniv/ and click on Sessions |

You're welcome Shane. I'd love to hear if the script does the trick for bumping your tip.

That's really interesting I have never heard of someone working at mcdonalds to do magic yet alone in the drive through. Why did you quit?
