Schulien's book is good. The routines in the book were ones he performed regularly. Matt was one of these guys that did a few routines and specialized in a handful of moves but he did them all extremely well and was also very entertaining. I believe the book has about 50 effects.

The Magic of Matt Schulien is magic that can be done by anyone. Matt used the basics in sleights and created wonders that had magicians as well as laymen flooding his magic bar. I remember asking Matt years ago if it was true that he could belly palm a deck, needless to say he did it right there in front of us. The reason this book is still around is simple, it is a classic. Well worth a study by anyone serious about close up magic.

A wonderful book, both for its historical merit as well as for the glimpse into a truly entertaining magician's performance! The tricks, which are also excellent, are just icing on the cake.

It's a classic, for good reason. If you do restaurant magic at all, you should read it.

When Alex said Matt's magic could be done by anyone...I had to wonder about the "belly palm." by the way, my copy was given to me in the mid 60s by the magician that "mentored" me. I've wondered if it's a collectors peice (first edition)...

It's a classic I put in an auction. An interesting read from a historical perspective as I remember, but I disposed of it many years ago so I obviously didn't think it a "must have". Probably another mistake I made...

I'm a late poster, I know, but Schulien's book is my favourite. If you read between the lines, you can see the strength of character that made Matt such a star.
Besides, there are the tricks. Solid classics, and no knucklebusters. I love (and use a variation of) Matt's Mental Fan Card Force. Ben |

Some of the effects in there are reputation makers. Card under tablecloth is definitely one of them.

If you are unsure get Eugene Burgers Mastering the Art of Magic. It is an incredible book with a depth that few books these days even attempt. There is a chapter on Schulien which will give you a good taster.
