Thanks Ron for the precision. I'll now read PDFs more easily. However, most people don't know about the "pages tab on the left", so that's why I think I will finally continue to create ebooks (exe) instead of PDFs.
And when you want to hide a page (just like the secret trick in Kuffs' Stuffs ebook), a PDF would show it directly. Only a .exe can hide a page for real (but I know that hiding a page is an uncommon process!) |

The pdf format sucks for an ebook in my opinion.
For an adobe product they are surprisingly user unfriendly. Open the pdf... zoom in on the page... Scroll around to center it.. wow how dumb. My guess is that the only person who would insist on a pdf is a mac user, or someone who is interested in seeing what the page they are trying to read would look like from very very far away. In the end, macs will still have more problems handling pdf's than pc's do. Unless your pdf was also created on a mac, watch out. And the software to produce a functional pdf is not a few hundred dollars, it was $449 last time I checked. This makes it by far the most expensive solution to publish an ebook. For most of us, it makes no sense. Rob |

PDF's are the way to go. first and formost this isn't a book. I have written a book but took the consideration of the computer into account. the problem is with sizing. 8.5x11 is standard fare with books. when making it for a pdf make it 6x9 this will allow the complete page to post up on the screen, at a nice font size without having to scroll. still not happy make it 5x8.

I don't any format is terrific for an eBook, whether it's PDF or anything else, like the one that simulates turned pages. Why ? Because it's an eBook, and must be read at the computer ! I like to read in bed.. that presents a bit of a problem, because my laptop is huge. I have a PDA, but the screen is far too small.
Now, I really have nothing against eBooks themselves, I think they're great in fact - the problem lies with eBook reader hardware. Probably the best thing around is a small tablet PC, but I really can't wait for some better hardware to come along. e-ink and e-paper will revolutionize eBooks. http://www.eink.com/ http://www.epaper.org.uk/index.php?optio......temid=36

Use frontpage to make the book in html. Save it as a nonsense named file, like http://www.eedtlktlllrlylyl;;t.com/yourd......eodi.htm or something
Open Acrobat and select New from Web Page option to create pdf file When someone needs the file as a pdf, you can attach it. If you need to get the file to someone quickly, and you're not able to attach it to an email, you can send someone to the file to see it in html. For me, it's a lot easier to edit the html, and then create the new acrobat file from the html. Good luck, just my |

I have and use Adobe Acrobate to create .PDF files for all my collection of instructions. The program is not worth the price because you need additional program to create and edit the .PDF files and these Adobe programs are very hard end and hard to learn, not to mention the extremely high prices. These are commercial programs for corperate business.
Another version I have found is the programs by Scansoft Inc that has changed their name to Nuance. They have several programs that permits direct scanning as a .PDF file and they also are the owners of PaperPort and OmniPage, programs that have been on the market since Windows 3.1. If you have MS Word and PaperPort Professional then makeing PDF is simple as printing. They also have just a PDF creator but if you found a mistake you would have to resave the file after corrections. Again, they have several options for this, if you get converter professional, you can edit, but not with plain converter or convert. Check it out. I found them good programs and easy to work with, so you can get on with your work. http://www.nuance.com/pdfconverter/ Kim Commando has a PDF creator on here site that is totally free. I have tried the program out and it works very well. Again, all it does is convert, not editing within the PDF files. |

Almost every book that has been produced in this country in the past dozen or so years either went to the publisher as a PDF file or was converted to a PDF file before it was printed.
There are some tremendous advantages to PDF files. One is that they are totally cross-platform. Any computer that has a copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is a free download, can display the file. But not all PDF files are equal. There are differences in resolution, which are determined by the way the original pages were set up and how they were converted into PDF files. While there are programs that will convert MS word files to PDF's they don't always work well. If you are serious about e-books, get the Pagemaker suite. It has what you need, and once you learn it (which I did, kicking and screaming!) you have an extremely versatile tool at your disposal. And you can save your PDF's that you send to the print house to be used as an e-book later. And, yes, you can scroll PDF files.

E-books have the potential to be very good indeed. Most folks who write e-books don't understand how to best use this relatively new medium.
For an example of how to write an effective e-book, take a look at this one: http://www.michaelclose.com/cgs.html Closely Guarded Secrets is an example of a good e-book. You get everything that you need to read the e-book on most computer platforms. The book is formatted so that it prints out nicely. The book is well written. There are nice illustrations. And there are short videos to help teach the timing required for the sleight of hand. Highly recommended.
