So what is the general consensus on eBay: is it a good place to buy and sell magic, or not?

Ebay is a great site- but I would not go there for magic. Some magic acution sites require the buyer is happy with the received product before paying the seller. WAY better than ebay's policies.

I've bought and sold many items on eBay with very few problems. The only thing is you need to be a knowledgeable buyer. Many eBay auctions end up with the items selling for more than they are worth.
Also, I always check the feedback carefully on sellers. Michael |

Hi:
A BIG "yes" for ebay. Michael said it - you need to have some knowledge so you can wade through or skip all the junk. ebay is my favorite place to go for deals. Ron |

Browsing can be fun now and then but setting up automatic searches for specific magic items on Ebay helps with the 'signal-to-noise' ratio.

What do you mean by "automatic searches"? Is this an ongoing search that keeps you updated?
When you guys run searches oneBay, what's been successful for you as far as criteria? I find that entering words like "illusion" and "magic" turns up evey piece of schlock magic on the site. What's been successful for keying in on REAL illusions, and not a crappy $1 ball-and-vase that the seller liberally lists as an "illusion." |

I like to buy some magic off of ebay because you can find some great bargains if you search. If you know what you are looking for you can usually find it for pretty cheap.
The only constant is change.

Yes. For example, I have one set up for 'Mark Strivings' so Ebay sends me an email every time that comes up in the header of a listing. (It also sends a few that are wildly off target but contain part of the search term. These just get deleted.) You can be quite specific too. One of my automatic searches has only produced two hits in 2 years!

I wouldnt say I love e-bay but I do use it a lot. I usually post it here first. If nobody wants it I turn to e-bay.

Hello.
I've bought literally hundreds of magic related items off of ebay. I've also sold many old tricks that no longer suit my performance style. I've come to find that most people on ebay are great- just make sure you know what you want in advance- research it here carefully on the Café to know what price you are willing to pay for your desired effect. I've seen some items sell for much more than if they were purchased directly online at a regular magic shop! (some people don't do their homework) Also carefully check and read the sellers feedback- those with few transactions and bad feedback should be avoided. I have over 500 transactions- 100 percent positive feedback- and no negatives. Only been stiffed once- lost out on about 15 dollars. Its one of the best places to go if your looking for used effects at competitive prices. This is my two cents worth- thanks! |

Tip, always always thru paypal, then if you di get stiffed then up to £500 can be recovered thru paypal. I don't know the limit in the U.S. but that's what it's like in the UK.

Note that ebay has two separate but overlapping categories, one for "Magic" in the Collectibles section & one for "magicians' supplies" in the Toys section. They really ought to consolidate those, but in the meantime look in both.
