Anyone who uses stooges to make their act more believable is sad IMO, especially people who have to fake reactions

Criss Angel got me into magic...and that's pure awesome. He's a really great performer, but I prefer Blaine over Angel.

I find his persona to be incredibly annoying. His whole attire and attitude just screams out "poser"... like he just stepped out of an 80's hair metal band, except he forgot to shower. All the tricks and effects he does look very contrived, not to mention the pathetic, obviously paid professional "audience" he has that pretend to be just random bystanders, and the hammish, overwrought expressions of awe he milks from them.
Criss Angel: like nails on a chalkboard. As with the popularity of shows like Jack*ss and Beavis and B*tthead, Criss Angel's success is one of those pop-culture barometers that convince me we are living not so far from the dystopia depicted in the movie Idiocracy. |

People constantly tell me how bad his live show is,so I really wonder if its him as a performer or just his live magic.

In my mind criss angel deserves credit for making magic "cool" again, and getting a younger demographic interested in magic. But, I also feel that his use of stooges, obvious camera trickery, and paid reactions have damage magic in a way. he has et a level of expectation that most performers cannot hope to attain. real world performers will look at 70 percent of what is on his show and tell you this is not doable in a real world setting. his levitation, walking on water, walking through a door... all impossible to replicate in a real world setting. I do not like that his show claims "continuous shot" when in fact it has been proven that they are not continuous. I do not like that every "demonstration" is "the craziest, most dangerous thing ive ever tried" or "criss is gonna die doing this, really he is".
in short, I think he is talentless, deceiving, and undeserving of his fame. |

I have just tried to watch the first episode of Season 6, but had to turn it off after a long ten minute talk about the canyon with people whom I had no reason to like or care about, which was followed by a scorpion trick which was so obviously a stooge, it made me cringe with embarrassment for our profession.
I mean, making a Scorpion appear in someone's mouth... I'm actually insulted that he treats his audiences like that. He's treats people like they are idiots and will fall for anything, and that is the biggest mistake you can make as an entertainer. How dare he treat people like that. I've had it with him. Unless he starts treating his audience with respect and a little intelligence, he will alienate everyone to such a degree that he gives 'magic' a bad name. This isn't about style, character, success or skill. Its about giving your audience respect and not expecting them to ignore the obvious and fall for a blatant lie. When you do that, your not a magician, your a con-artist, and a bad one at that. |

I saw the episode you are talking about. while watching the scorpion segment I actually felt silly for watching it. such an obvious plant. I mean really...a scorpion in someones mouth? also, on the same episode I believe he performed an effect where he and one of his crew switched places. criss was in a port o potty hanging from a crane, the crew member was conveniently standing behind a large piece of plywood. once the transposition was complete the crew member looked amazed and shocked, and confused as to how he ended up in the port o potty and criss ended up on the ground behind the plywood. when a magician watches his show we are able to see where the camera trickery and stooges come into play, and this shows how truely unskilled he is. it is sad that this guy gets credited as the greatest magician ever, etc...
has anyone ever considered the possibility that he has a twin? |

I can't respect anyone that uses paid spectators.

I should have clarified: paid actors as spectators.

I remember watching Criss Angel on T.V. and thinking, "He must be the devil or evil," because some of the things he did, I couldn't possibly explain other than being somehow a camera trick or special effects. As amazed as I was by him, he didn't make me want to learn magic, and neither did David Blaine. Believe it or not, Dan Sperry from America's Got Talent is the magician that made me say, "That's cool. I want to learn magic." So, does that mean Criss Angel isn't a good magician? Well, he's fooled me (but then again, I don't know what to look for as much as experienced magicians), and I find him very entertaining, and as many have said, he's bringing a lot of attention to the world or magic. I think that's a great thing.

He's the reason I started doing magic tricks. His performances are great, and the style he has is just genius.

One of the things I really like about Criss is that he brings, and has brought, so many new people to magic. Nyphoebe is a perfect example of that.

Did you see the last Criss Angel show where he and a spec. picked up a deck, and he picked a card from his deck first, then the spec. from her deck, and both cards matched?! I don't know the name of this trick, but this effect was very visual.
I don't like much of what he does, but this looked really good! It's the small effects that I look at, and some of his are really good! But not the best! |
