Lior,

Are you asking for true mentalists or those that call themselves that because it's the latest fashion?

Lior it is hard to come up with a number, bare in mind that every country has at leasts hundreds that practice magic, professionaly or not, and it is almost impossible to reach out each and everyone and investigate, I'd suggest you to make a statistic with the following:
-Number of purchasers of magic suppliements from dealers, websites etc..per month, per year -> this will give you the "shiur gdila" of the purchasers, still knowing they practice or do magic for a living, you can assume that if the same purchaser has bought several products.
-Number of clients in magic schools at every country, per example here in Israel I think there is a place that teaches magic, so you can add the results.
-The number of members in public forums like this-counting the proffesional and unproffesional and dividing them to your delight.
-The number of magicians, mentalists or whatever that attend to lectures, conventions etc..and dividing them per area.
Thee are global divisions that I think might cover over 80 % of your needs, the other 20 % are those who we don't know yet or haven't yet made interaction with.

This I think would be the most reasonable answer, it's like counting sand grain if you ask me, but if you insist. . .

(Nice talking at the tv channel 10 a few days ago I didn't know who you are but when she said Thanks Lior I assumed it was you, alas somebody had to say reasonable things about magic here in Israel, can't stand those pricks on tv who get specials for nothing, like E***, but well who am I to judge ;-) )

Lior:
This type of information can not be ascertained by simple questions of a forum like this. You're looking for world-wide marketing information on a particular subgroup. To get accurate information, a quite bit of research has to be done.

My advice, hire a researcher to get you this information. If you find an efficient one, it should only be around five thousand dollars. Just remember, sometimes you get what you pay for.

Calamari knows 16 and I know 5, three of whom are part of his 16. That makes 18 in total, 4 of whom are in America, 1 in Israel, 2 in Holland, 3 in Canada, 1 in Switzerland (Hi Matt), 1 in Spain, none in England (not 'real' mentalists that is) and six in Scotland, which is known as the home of golf, football, haggis-making, and now mentalism.
I hope this helps. No doubt others might know even more.
Good luck with the famous telecom company.

Both Genii and Magic magazine have these numbers in each issue (I think Genii is around 6000 copies).

I'll be in Israel in April and hope to see you Smile

How many mentalists?

Why, seven of course....

One to say he already knew...

Another to say the first one is a fake....

The third to say it was his first and was stolen without permission...

The fourth to argue that method was in Anneman...

The fifth to say he RVed it...

The sixth to say that RV isn't possible...

The seventh to say it all never happened...

The title of this thread has reminded me of a little riddle:

How many Mentalists does it take to screw in a light bulb?
Just one! But it takes him FOREVER to get to the effect!!

(That joke's just for you, Mark Lewis!!)

In North America, the number of full-time professionnal magicians is approximately 450 (including mentalists).

In the whole world, the number of full-time professional magicians is approximately 11700 (including mentalists).

Where did you get that? 450 for the US is very low. In my market we have over 30 full time pros that advertise in the various phone books, and about 15 who do not. This is 10% of what you say we have nationally, just from the Boston area.

Hahaha; My estimation was rapidly calculated. Reality must indeed be different.

However, I don't think that a magician advertising in a phone book is necessarily a full-time performer. Counting the ads is indeed probably a good "indicator" though.
