Hey guys! I'm a safety representative at work and I was thinking about putting together a routine with sponge balls, chop cup and/or cups & balls, and finally the snowstorm.
I have my snowstorm idea figured out. to sum it up, I'll talk about how winter weather can change very suddenly, and what seems like a light snowfall (fans a few pieces of tissue) can suddenly turn into a huge storm without warning (fans the load) Any ideas on how I can introduce the sponges (I have every color in 1 1/2 and 3 in except yellow) and the cups & balls? Thanks everyone!! Wes |

I'm assuming safety oriented routines.
Sponges cut to look like small fires and a large one with a similar shape. How fires spread. C&Bs. I'm thinking about something along the lines of the '3 Little Pigs' story but with hurricanes and tornados as the dangers. These are not great ideas but hopfully they are food for thought. |

Sponges cut into orange safety cones?
No trees were killed in the making of this message, but a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.

I like Dave's safety cone idea. It keeps you honestly on theme.

I think it would be helpful to know what safety issues you'd like to address. And who is your audience.
Not to take this too off track. But what do you think about deciding what you want to teach, and then picking effects that best suit the message? Let's say you wanted to teach street safety (I realize this may not be the safety situation you're talking about). If the main catch phrase you wanted to get across would be "look both ways before you cross the street" I would try to envision an effect with an ending that would tie into that phrase. And then build the effect up with supporting props and themes. ( Just typing the above I thought of the sucker die box. "He looked to the left, but the car was coming from the right. He looked to the right, but the car came from the left. But when he looked both ways, he saw it was safe to cross." )

Interesting concepts, guys! I'm just getting into the "addiction" of magic & I don't have a lot of money to spend. Actually I'm wanting to work the theme around what props I have.
The traffic idea sounds nice. say, with a chop cup, say something along the lines of "Traffic can be funny, sometimes you'll look one way & nothing is coming." (pick up the cup to reveal the small ball. Load a big ball.) then say but when you think it's safe to cross, things have a way to come seamingly out of nowhere." My outfit is full of adults, but I still have to give briefings on simple things like spilling hot coffee and not falling down stairs. I'd just like to find a way to give an amusing briefing that they'll actually learn something from. |

What topics do you want to dicuss? And what is the context of this performance?

Let's see, drinking & driving, driving in general, safety around the workplace, safety when playing sport or any outdoor activity. Pretty much anything you can dream of.

Just brainstorming:
Either sponge balls or chop cup could be a sobriety test. (Although It'd be hard not to make light of the issue) Cups and Balls could be increasing intoxication. Cups and balls ending could tie in a sports theme, after producing 3 balls hold the center cup over your head, as if to look up and see where the ball came from, and let the final load fall on your head, end with "And always wear a helmet". The sponge safety cone idea could involve a distracted driver. Every time he (you) looks away (cell phone, billboard, radio) the cone gets bigger. End looking away with a foam sign popping out of your hand that says "BRIDGE OUT". What are your workplace safety issues?

These are really good ideas. I've always found it better to start with the message and then see how to make the props fit, rather than the other way around.
Don't forget that you can also make up signs on your computer. These can be used in many ways. Signs on pieces of cardboard can be handled somewhat like playing cards. The use of a chop cup as a sobriety test is a good one. You can present this with some tasteful humor, but leave them with a serious message. This takes as much skill as the magic.
