Hello, all. I am looking for the track that has 20 minutes of silence on it for use with the IPod set-up for performances. There was mention of it a while back, and I have PMed a few people who were involved with that thread, but I am opening up my request to this forum. Can anyone email it to me at magician@jayrosenberg.com ?
Most appreciated, Jay Rosenberg |

I believe it was "created" by Jason Litchford (Cafe name: MR2Guy). He was the one who emailed it to me. It works like a champ. It's just what I needed.
I assume, based on his post, Jason works for Griffin Technology. http://www.griffintechnology.com Good luck! DeWayne |

I just used the recorder in Windows or Wave edit. I have a number of different length files of silence. They were pretty easy to create. If I recall correctly, I just imported the wave file directly into iTunes. I just insert these segments where the are needed in my "magic show" playlist.

I think I was the one that mentioned this originally.
I just made the track in Audacity, which is a free sound editing program that you can download. Just use any sound editing program, insert 20 minutes of silence, and save it as a .wav file or whatever, and then drop it into iTunes or the program you use. Works great!

Hi
I posted a 20 minute .mp3 of silence for anyone interested. Silence Track Primarily, it is used by performers to use their iPods and the Griffin AirClick so they can remotely control their music. iPods do not have an option for playing a playlist, and pausing after each track is finished, a must for performers. By adding a track of silence between each track, you can have a track play (for your first miracle), and “pause” until you are ready to start your next routine. The iPod will continue to play the selected playlist, but since the track is silent, you can control when you want the next track of music to play by simply hitting the next song button on the AirClick. Simply arrange a playlist in iTunes like this: Track 1. Silence track Track 2. Silence track Track 3. Silence track.... and so on. Credits: I did think this up as a workaround for using an iPod and the AirClick as a low cost alternative to more expensive, proprietary remote systems, Apparently it had been previously thought of before, but I don’t know who to credit the original idea to. Download the Silence track and share it freely, I’m pretty sure that you can share it legally. Contact me if you have any questions. Take care Jason

A bit of topic, but didn't a famous composer 'write' a piece of music called something like 3minutes 12seconds and it was just 3minutes and 12seconds of silence? Cant remember where I heard it but god it was thrilling!
Keep passing the open windows!

I have recorded silence on my MD by just recording with no input source connected. I also have a stand alone CD player/recorder and have done the same with it.
With the MD, it is really simple, because you can just turn it on, push record, and go to bed. The next day you will have hours of silence. (Assuming you got a normal night's sleep....ha-ha) Then you can edit the silence by placing track marks at 20 minutes, 30 minutes, 20 seconds, or wherever you want. When you have created all the silent tracks you need, you can erase the leftover and you're done. Could I load these silent tracks I have created into iTunes, and later into an iPod? Regan

Yes, you certainly can, or just create them in a program like Audacity, which is FREE to download here:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ Even if you get the silent track from somewhere else, I still recommend this program to learn how to do some basic sound editing. I've taken some of the instructions off of my CD and put them over music to kick off my show...works great and sounds professional.

Thanks Tim.
I did the same thing with your CD and I agree, it does sound professional. I recorded mine the old fashion way, with a 2 CD players and a stand-alone CD player/recorder. I ran multiple CD players into my CD recorder (via a mixer) and accomplished the mix. Regan

The artist sits down at the piano, opens it up, and plays nothing for 4 min and 33 seconds. I do believe the piece is actually meticulously notated. John Cage is not my style at all, I think his work is ridiculous. Luckily, I go to an arts conservatory, and have to learn about "artistes" like him. As for your silence idea Regan, with recording using no signal on MD and the putting it into itunes, it all sounds like it will work to me! I'll also throw in the recommendation for audacity. Kevin

Update: I used the silence track yesterday for a birthday party, exactly as Jason (MR2GUY) suggested above. It worked great! I used Audacity to do all my editing, including cropping the silence tracks down to 10 minutes each. It worked like a charm! Before the kids came in, I played the silence track. As they were shepherded into the performance room, I just advanced the track to my opening 'walk-in' music and we were off!
Thanks to all who responded on this topic. It went very well yesterday. I also must recommend Audacity as the sound editor of choice. I know nothing about editing, but this was easy to use, and very effective. Jay |
