Well said, sir!
"Flowers: the Dead Gift That Keeps On Dying!" - Aye Jaye, The Golden Art of Schmoozing The hand-crafted napkin rose often does have a much greater impact, simply because the performer took the time and effort to MAKE it for the lady! One does not see much hand-crafted work in this day of computerized, machine-made examples of Sturgeon's Law as Applied to Manufacturing (90% of Everything is C&*p). And it's good to see you back on the Café'! Lee Darrow, C.H. (Now available in the new, abridged version, without the appendix!)

Lee,
Glad to know that somebody agrees with me! Thanks for the welcomeback though I've never really left! I just pop in from time to time when the schedule allows! By the way AJ's book is brilliant! Simon |

Aye Jaye's book is really good. He's also finishing up a new book on carny life which should be great.
In regards to Kevin's Floating Rose... I think his routine is perfect as is. I think the change from a white napkin rose to a real rose is more effective than using one of my red/green Napkin Roses. It's an effect that's usually performed on stage and I can imagine some people with poor vision might think that you just floated a real rose, there was a flash of fire, and then you gave the real rose away. I think the color change is more dramatic and therefore better. That being said, I remember when I first showed Kevin a pack of the red/green napkins. The first words out of his mouth were, "These aren't flash paper, are they?" It was funny. Anton, If you do try the illusion with my napkins please let me know how it plays. I use the Napkin Rose all the time on stage but usually just make it and present it to a female volunteer as a "magical" gift. I've also presented it to the hostess of the party as the audience recognized her with applause. As I do this, I also thank her for hiring me for the party. This lets everyone else in the room know who has my contact information. I know Doc Eason has also done this with the Napkin Roses. Michael Mode |

Same here Michael,
I make the (white) rose as a special gift for the lady who has just helped me with my somewhat vile presentation of card to mouth (Sleight-of-Tongue). The closing line, "You get two things from this experience ... this perfect little rose and, far more importantly ... all of this applause!" works very well for me. Simon |

I did it at the legal advice of my attorney. Printing the copyright and company name (same as the website) on the napkins offers me legal protection against other people copying the product and producing similar napkins. I thought long and hard about this because I didn't want it to interfere with the look of the rose. I finally decided to print it in a place that would be hidden once the rose was twisted. It ends up on the inside of the stem and can't be seen the recipient of the rose. Thanks for asking! I'm glad you enjoy the napkins! Michal |

Hi ya Michael..
I sure know the logo on the napkins is a protection against copying your product, wouldnt work the same if the logo was printing on the paket that contains the napkins? Or from the inside instead of outside, the reason I am going on about this is,, if some one notice this and checks the website (as it happend to me once) was a group and one saw it and they all went wow how cool there is website you can get them and they were asking me about it and the lights and I make it float as well, so they actually were convinced everything I did that 10 minutes routine was obtained from the internet (your website). Since that day I was a bit reluctant when making the rose and when I make one I try to hide the logo as much as I can. But I havent stopped making them, and will still use them for the special occasions or special persons. As for the plain white ones, they just there you take it and make a rose, still using your method I find that the best method. Cheers Michael Zac

Zac,
I can't have the logo printed on the inside because of the printing process. The logo is printed on the inside of the folded napkin to make it less obvious. If you show both sides before opening the napkin up fully, the audience sees nothing. I've made thousands of the roses using my napkins and I've never had anybody even question what was written on it. They are watching me twist the napkin and are more interested in the creation of the rose. Their focus is on the top of the flower and by the time I start twisting the stem, the logo is already gone. Either way, I'm glad you still like my colored napkins the best. I appreciate you using them and hope they help you create many memories. Sincerely, Michael Mode |

Re: the separation process...
I put a tape loop around my thumb and another around my forefinger. Then *lightly* touch them together on either side of the layers. Pull them apart and about an inch is started. I will sit down with a package of them while watching something on tv and go through the whole pack. Carefully refold them and you are ready to rock and roll. I use the napkins all the time. They are great. All someone has to do is make one of these for someone else and see the expression on the faces of the recipients and you will understand the strength of such a thing. It's great. and to learn a few other thngs about the fold.. The dvd is worth it... the ideas there are worth a measly $20. Michael has done us a favor.. just buy em and do em ...They are fabulous.

Thanks Doc! Good to hear from you.
I forgot about your tape idea for the separation process. It works well. I just told the story the other day about you giving the Napkin Rose to the hostess of your show. She was the one who had a love of roses and had real ones on all of the tables. I thought your closing line was just great as you presented her with the Napkin Rose. Talk to you soon. Michael |

Produce Rose with a Bill is a very good idea as your final tick after your "bill switch" routine.

The napkin rose samples in Magic Magazine arrived a couple of weeks prior to a missions trip to Ecuador. My wife and I disussed how they might be used. I ordered 100 of them plus the DVD.
I took them to Ecuador. The group I went with was doing medical mission, while my wife, son and a youth from our church did presentations in preschools with an interpreter. However, I spent some time milling around and greeting people who were waiting to see a doctor or were waiting to get their meds. I made napkin roses for all the women. They were present to them with the words "Jesus Loves You" in Spanish (had to be taught the Spanish). They were greatly appreciated. Bob Spray |

If I am going to be making a lot, I'll give myself time to remove the white backs. I made the mistake of under-estimating the time it would take me to do this when I had to make a large number of roses one after the other. ...But I will not make that mistake again; which is why I will take the time to remove the backs if the situation is going to require the creation of multiple roses in a short time. You can make the roses without removing the backing, of course, but I feel like it makes a better rose if the back is reomved. If I'm going to be making just a few, or will have plenty of time between roses, I'll remove the backs in front of the spectator. In fact, I will often hand the white backing to a spectator and teach them how to make a rose while I make theirs. As I've mentioned in another topic string on this board; I knew how to do the Napkin Rose prior to having bought Michael Mode's DVD. However, it has some good ideas and I've learned that when you hear one good application of magic or magic-related items, the creativity starts to flow and other ideas are sparked as a result. The DVD was a good investment for me. Michael is a class act and the DVD is a good reflection of his professionalism and talent. I feel the DVD is a good, quality value for the price. Michael continues to build on the great respect I already have for him and the free napkins and a new folding of the rose in Magic Magazine last year was just one more example of how he loves the art and the magic community more than he loves the almighty dollar. Quality outshines quantity everytime for me and the Napkin Rose DVD is a quality item; even if you already know how to make one. I know this is an old topic, but I saw it here among the Magic Magazine comments and had to throw in my two cents worth! |
