I need some expert help. I am having some magnetic car signs made, but the hat and wand clipart I sent to the sign company was too small and when they try using it, the image is pixelated. The image was a .gif. I was looking at clipart.com and am considering registering there to get a good clip art pic. What format can be used that won't pixelate when enlarged or where can I get a good image reasonably priced?
I'm looking for a nice looking hat and wand with color or something along those lines that stands out. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Dan,
You are looking for .eps (encapsulate post script) clip art. More specifically, you are looking for vector based graphics rather than rasterized images. There are other formats you can use but EPS is the most common. A vector based graphic can be enlarged to any size without degradation. GIFs are rasterized images that deteriorate when enlarged, as you found out. The rasterized image formats include .gif, .tif, .jpg, .psd and others. You can use a rasterized image but you have to make sure that the resolution and print size is large enough for your use. The images used on the web are usually 72 dpi which is not high enough for the same size printed image. To be printed, they usually need to be at least 200 - 300 dpi. This web page explains a lot about graphic formats: http://www.jhc.org/misc/figs_glossary.shtml#vg |

Ideally, you want something in a vector graphic format. If you have to make do with bitmap files (.gif, .jpeg etc.) then they'll need to be 100% to size otherwise enlarging them will result in pixelation.
Oops! Michael's already just said it - p.s. Do a search at http://www.istockphoto.com They have lots of vector cliparts/illustrations for download at very cheap rates

Just keep in mind that clip art is just that. Artwork that is common place. Because it is so common place, it does not brand you as well as a unique logo or branded image would. The signs and graphics you choose to represent you should be as unique as the style of magical performance you give.
The first impressions you often make on any prospect may just be from the materials and signs you are putting out there. You want to make sure that image and impression is one that shows top quality. There is also a chance that if you do use clip art, that someone else in your area may be using the exact same graphic image. Just words of advice and something to think about. Kyle

I'm not sure what you are using it for but I would stay away from clip art-- at the very least go for Photo art- you can buy on programs with literally 100 000 photos, that are royalty free
There are also plent of web sites |

Just keep in mind that some processes charge you a lot more for CMYK or 4-color printing then flat Pantone PMS printing. It is all in the matter in which it is done. It is best to ask your printer or sign maker first what the rates are and how 4 color process printing will effect your pricing. Just something to think about.

Go for high end bitmap images- min 300 dpi & at least 15- 50mb in size when not compressed-jpg etc
Vector images created in a drawing programme such as Freehand or Adobe Illustrator etc by a designer will work really well as mentioned you can enlarge with no loss of quality-magnetic signs for your car etc don't need to be huge files -you may combine good photo with vector artwork & the result will be fine for you Print shop or sign company will help you get this ready to a stage for the magnetic signs or a good designer-Do it properly-Will look Professional in the long run Its not expensive!! |

I like to think that a lot of magicians spend a lot of time and money invested in their act and in their show. They spend a lot on their outfits and on their props to make sure they look the best they can look. They do all of this to make sure the show is at the high level it is supposed to be in regards to quality.
However a lot of them give it all up when they think about their own promoitional materials. They forget that their promotions and marketing materials is a direct extension of themselves and their act or show. They often do not realize that often the very first impression they make on any prospect is in the marketing materials and designs that they send out. If this is the first impression you are often giving to anyone who may end up booking you, why would you want to go cheap and not spend the same amount of time and energy as you did building your show? Take the extra time and energy to do it right and make your marketing materials as strong and as high quality as the rest of your show. It really will make that much difference. Kyle
