Hey can somebody explain the biology of how doves just sit in your clothes. To me it sounds scary. Are they fun to have as a pet? How long can they stay inside your clothes? Are they a pain to take care of? What are the best, most practical and impromptu effects (you know what I mean)...

You should buy a basic book on dove magic to get you started. May I reccomenn Chavez's Encyclopedia of Dove Magic. It will give you a good start and answer any questions you may have. Learn a lot more about them befire you look for effects to do with them. It's in the best interest of you, your act, and most importantly, the bird.

However they do not play with toys, talk, and/or fly around as much as other birds. They eat, poop, sleep, coo, and make a mess with loose feathers. They perch a great deal of the time. Feeding is straight forward as Game-bird feed is available. Also keep in mind that if you use any animal in a performance they are a partner, a friend, and in many times the real star. They are more than just a pet. 3> The Chavez book is real good, and as a beginner if and when you get any doves I would start with Tony Clark's' Unmasks 2 DVD as all of the productions except one do not use body loads. Other standard props are Dove Pan, Dove table, and the like which are easy to use so that you can concentrate on performance. Research all factors BEFORE you make the commitment. Hmmm...I think I might give doves a miss.
Have you ever had one poop in your clothes?! |
James Adamson Special user Deatsville - Holtville - Slapout, AL 945 Posts |
That is a common job hazard. They will poop in anything, food, water, and of course on the magician and his clothes, etc.
Johnny Thompson actually uses a poop joke in his dove act. James Adamson http://www.seam2006.com

I agree with James Adamson. But I like to have my doves out with in 10 minutes of the show and that’s the jacket/Pocket load doves, the doves that are loaded in props can be there up to the 20 minutes. Sometimes I find myself working in a hot room and that’s when I bring out the prop doves with in the 10 minutes.
James, I found when I was training my doves to do the fly backs and I did not put my finger for the dove to land on, the dove landed on my head, my wife found this funny and I thought about Johnny Thompson when it happen. So I will have one dove train to fly back to my head. Soon I will add the fly back to the head here > http://www.iammaro.com/doves.html Maro

Nickelby, my point is... most of the veterens here have gone into great detail on these topics before. By them answering them again on here, they might not go into such great detail and give you the answer you are looking for.
By scrolling through those 31 pages you might find even more information than you wanted, therefore learning more. As a new dove worker I'm sure looking through the archives is a good idea. Justin |

Nickelby, Justin is correct. Each and every question you have asked has been answered many times on this forum. I realize without the search engine at the current time, it is difficult to find what you are looking for but since a large portion of this forum is dedicated to dove magic, you should scroll through the topics. You'd be amazed at how much information is contained here. Of course the other advice you received about purchasing books is good as well. You can never have enough material on dove magic.
