Perseverance, marketing and plain old chutzpah go a lot farther than skill and talent. We have a local individual here who's been doing "magic" full time for years and years. He's the type of performer that once you book him you'll never book him, nor any other magician ever again. As bad as he is he is always working as he's cheap and out there beating the pavement. He is actually so bad that he routinely gets asked to leave civic events, where he often goes to drum up business and sell balloon animals. He then turns around a sues the city for denying him his civil rights and garners a large cash settlement. By the dictionary definition this guy is a "Professional" as he earns his living from the performance of magic. But he is far from viewed as a professional by the local magic community.

AHA!! Behold the new aproach to the question. Who is more professional, the man who makes $10,000 of a $100,000 yearly income from magic, or the man who makes all of a $10,000 yearly income from magic? The first man makes 10% of his yearly income from performing magic, but the second man makes 100% of his yearly income from performing magic, yet they make the exact same amount from performing magic. That is exactly how silly this question is.

It's not how much you make but how you present yourself and the craft of magic that deems one "Professional".
You know that you are a Professional Magician when, after a show, people stop asking you "So what do you do for a living?"

We had a guy like that here. He was awful. People like that are a boil on the posterior of magic.

There is. It's at $19,999.99 per year. After that, you are professional, no matter how bad your show is.
Just kidding!

When they say that some things never change, they are talking about Bill's sense of humor. Wish you had said $9,999.99 a year, I could have been a Pro.

I never expected this much response to the question.
Very insightful. |

Once again I'm going to catch hell for this, but I don't think there are a high percentage of magicians who work a 40 hour week. My guess would be less than 10%. I hope I never work a 40 hour week, but if I do, I can retire after two of them.
