This is just out of curiosity. One of my hobbies is playing pool. I belong to a couple of leagues. My current handy cap is 5 (goes between 2 and 7).
I've meet a lot of other magicians and there seems to be quite a few who are also pretty good pool players. So I was curious as to just how popular it is among magicians. Or maybe you have a similar hobby such as Darts or Bowling (I have a 185 average in bowling right now. Ron Jaxon |

I played in a dart league a couple of years ago. It was more like a drinking league. Best we ever did was come in second. There was always that Irish team from Woodside, Queens that would beat everyone.
My father put himself through college hustling pool. He never belived in letting anyone win at anything. I'd get to break and as soon as I missed, he'd run the table. I'm painfully average at pool. |

I am very serious at pool. I don't belong to any leagues, but I can run racks of 9-ball fairly consistently. I am 22 and finishing up my last year of college, and unfortunately I don't get to play nearly as often as I'd like. I love to play though, it is my favorite thing to do besides golf (even more than magic I'm sorry to say!).
I have always wondered how many pool players there are on these boards as well. I think it would be cool to post pics of each others cue sticks. I attached a picture of mine. I also have a break cue, but I am looking to buy a new one. Any suggestions? This pic is my play cue. Click here to view attached image. |

I do... I believe John Born plays a lot too.
I rock a sp Joss with a 12mm tip.... hits so good never been able to warrent spending any money on a different cue. Re: break cues, if your league/team/friends allow it, check out the Fury J/B cue with phenolic tip/ferrule on ebay for like $144 shipped, very good for price. I'd say I'm about a 6 right now but so far I havent plateaued(been playing for about 1.5 years) |

Love pool and I'm trying to get into Snooker. Pool is a great way for me to cut loose and relax and I enjoy trying to make my game look like how it would if a magical character was playing it. Y'know, hours practicing cool ways to shoot those random shots that occur from time to time.

I play pool and bowling but I'm not nearly as good as you guys are. Speaking of pool, check out this 8-year old pool shark.

I always go to play a nice game of pool when I'm in the mood to be laughed at. My scientific knowlege of vectors makes me a reasonable player and I can make some spectacular shots. Give me a nice straight shot and it's a good bet I'll scratch or miss.

I figured there where quite a few in here. When I go to magic conventions and there's a pool table I sometimes ask someone to shoot a game with me. Most of them have been fairly good shooters.
I'll tell you the strangest match I've ever had during pool league. For those who don't know how the handy cap works it tells you how many games you have to win in order to win the match. For example if a 5 shooter goes against a 3 shooter then the 5 will have to win four games before the 3 wins two (something like that). Anyway, this was the first night of league for that season and I was shooting against a guy who had no handy cap yet (means it was his first time shooting on league). So the race was to 2 games (who ever wins two games sins the match). I broke and got an 8 ball break. So I won the first game with one shot. I broke again and got another 8 ball break but I also scratched. So I lost the second game in one shot. The other guy broke and dropped the 8 ball. So the entire match was only 3 shots and he won it with only one shot. Got the be the shortest match in history. LOL Ron Jaxon |

I LOVE playing pool. I don't have a table, but hopefully some day... I find its funner to play for money. Gives more motivation.

I live in Taiwan so I play 9 ball and 14.1 very often. The guys here are exceptional but you do learn a lot. I am sure I am one of very few people who can say I have beaten a world champion in 9 ball but considering I only one 2 games out of the 15 odd games we played and we were drinking a few pints of beer I don't think it should count. As for darts I play 3 or 4 times a week but we only play Killer also known as Cricket and we close out in between 6 to 10 rounds.
As for bowling I consider one round where I get more than 100 points good for me. That and Basketball are two games I cannot get down. Never really play them. |

Some years ago I lived in Virginia for a while. I went into a fairly busy bar and saw a pool table. What surprised me was that no one was playing. I looked in another section of the bar and there was a group playing bumper pool. They where more into that then the regular pool table. This surprised me because I always thought about children when I thought of bumper pool.
But I gotta tell you. The real game is very hard. A lot harder the the normal 8-ball and 9-ball I play. I tried to join them but I was nothing to them at that game. Ron Jaxon |

A Nine-ball story: I played a lot of pool when I was young, then didn't touch it for years. A few years ago, I decided that it would be good to do in my old age (69). I practiced regularly for a few weeks, then I decided to enter a local nine-ball tournament at Tulsa Billiard Palace, a serious pool room where a lot of champions have grown up.
So, my first round in the tournament, this young man beat me 10 games in a row! I though, "What the H...? I am not That bad." Two days later, I was watching the U.S. Open on TV and saw my opponent playing! He won fifth in the U.S. Open! I found that Danny Harriman is one of the top ranked pros in the world. This is like entering your first local golf tournament and drawing Tiger Woods for your first match. That would never happen in golf, but it does happen in pool. Best regards, Glenn Godsey |

I love to shoot pool, I really suck though. I bowl in a league, average around 170, although I didn't show it at WMS. Anyone ever have a chance to see Chef Anton shoot in person? I've seen video clips of him and that boy is quite the shark.
