I am exploring the idea of doing a vanish of myself, to reappear in the audience.
1. I want this to be accomplished with only myself, no assistants. 2. I want to be able to do this on any stage. - I am going to do this at elementary school shows. So the stage is not too elaborate, I assume they will all have a back curtain. If I need to I can bring my own backdrops to allow me to vanish. Basically the effect will have to be, I get into a box or something, slip out, they still think I'm there (gotta have some movement or other convincer, and then I'm in the audience.) I already have 2 illusions that require an assistant and some control over stage lighting to accomplish, but this one needs to be solo. Any ideas, partial ideas, good book to check out? Thanks in advance. Scott |

Oops,
I forgot, I don't really have a budget. If the effect is good enough, I'll sell the farm to buy the box. (well almost). Thanks again. scott |

Scott,
The problem with most school stages is that they are not conducive to be trying to vanish like that. I have been trying myself, since I do a one-man show, but in most cases the wings (if there are any) they are full of um...stuff. Most schools that I have run into use their stages as a storage unit. Some schools don't have side exits to be attempting a reappearance. PM me sometime for some ideas. I currently travel around the country doing school assemblies. Have seen many shapes and sizes of stages. Is this idea of what your trying to do just going to be done on one stage or are you wanting to take it around to other schools? How are you planning on keeping peoples' attention on the stage while your running off? Robert |

Different schools. Most of the schools I have been in have some type of back door to get out of the stage area. I may run into a problem getting around the audience, as this back door leads to an entrance next to the stage and not around to the back of the theater (lunch room ).
As for attention on stage... that's one of the big problems here isn't it? A little brainstorming: The box could move, some kind of motor that spins like a washer but a little off kilter to make it move lots. A video of a shadow? probably too complex for this type of show (but I am putting that into a larger illusion as we speak, actually I am in the testing stage right now.) Maybe the box is locked and the lock starts to turn, and the door starts to open. Isn't that like Copperfield did with his escape from the imploding building? Maybe the attention is on a large timer, counting down to my DOOM! Dancing girls! Oh yeah, no assistants. But I do like the dancing girls! Principal or teacher on stage, holding a rope, that is postponing my DOOM! Dancing principals! Streakers! Ok now I'm out of control. Scott |

How about something like this. I am tied up to a chair, covered (ala dekolta chair) and there is some type of automation under the cloth, and then I run up from the back and make myself vanish.
Seems like the biggest obstacle is the time issue, some schools you can get around pretty quick. Some may take a loooooooong time. scott |

How about I get locked into a box of some sort, then a video plays (onto a projection screen) and its a recording of me, addressing the audience, and I make my self disappear!
That would solve some issues, like keeping it at least interesting on stage. Scott |

The Fearson Monkey Vanish is actually a really good suggestion, made by Lou. You should give it a try.
