Was anyone else as disappointed in the GET NYMAN 3 DVD set as I was? After all the great things I heard about Andy here and in other places, I felt it was a huge (and over-priced) let down.

I thought there was some pretty good commercial stuff. Not everything was jaw dropping, but then I don't necessarily expect that.
However there is one routine that I immediately added to my shows and I have now performed many times. It gets really good reactions and has the advantage of being easily personalized for a guest of honor or VIP. A short while ago I received a nice fat fee to perform at an engagement party. I used this routine to help the guy produce the ring and propose to his girlfriend. There wasn't a dry eye in the room. So I guess I would have to say the set really has repaid itself many times over! Oh and I hope you don't mind, but I'm not going to share which routine it is! Got to let people do a bit of work for themselves, don't you think? I also enjoyed the explanations which are usually the least enjoyable part of a DVD for me. I found myself chuckling along watching the guys crack each other up. And there is a really good joke on the third (I think) disk - the one about guessing the old fella's age. Give it another chance - you might find more there than you think. Cheers, James |

Bitterman:
I originally thought as you. I watched the performance DVD and was not impressed from a "magical point of view." Then I watched the explanations and was amazed at some of the thought that went into structuring and routining the effects. I rewatched it and found more enjoyment. The set grows on you, not just for the effects, but the routining, the subtleties, the handling of volunteers. Don't get me wrong, much of the material is very strong, but some did not fit that particular venue. Andy addresses this during the explanation portion. Watch it again, see if your opinion does not change. I feel it was well worth the investment. Tony |

I’ll try to watch them again later but my main complaint about the GET NYMAN DVD is that all of the tricks are slight derivatives of other, older, well known tricks. There was no need to watch the explanation DVD (unfortunately I did and at best I could compare it to WAYNE’S WORLD; a couple of kids putting on a show in their parent’s basement), but I honestly didn’t learn anything new. He really just slapped movie names on old tricks. How many times did he ask to cut to 'Rick's camera' and still not get the show?
Since I already know Bank Night PATEO Force, the work of Larry Becker, Sneak Thief, how to use a stooge, nail nicks and the wonders of a three way deck I can’t really say that any secrets were revealed to me by the DVD. The performance and explanations could have easily fit on one disc so there was no reason for the inflated $59.95US 3-disk price (and by definition they shouldn’t charge for the ‘extra’ disk, which for, other than the slick Svengali demo, was a total waste of time). The DVD also promised "Here you will see a fast-paced, high-impact performance including, at full Nyman energy". The show was lackluster at best. I’m told that Nyman is great live, but that first disk barely got off the ground, even the audience at the show seemed bored at points. He concedes on disk two that many of the effects on disk one were not suited for the stage he used, so why did he do it? I almost longed for ’David and John’ of the L&L tapes, rather than his constant pulling of friends from the audience (the DVD also claims that this was a live, paying audience, but I would beg to differ). The overall production values were sub-standard. It was almost as if his camera men set-up ten minutes before Nyman took the stage and no thought was given to blocking. Since there was very little in the way education or entertainment value to the DVD and Nyman honestly cannot claim authorship of any of the principles used in the effects, I really wonder what the point of the DVDs were, other than to cash in on his connection to Derren Brown.

I must add: I let Alakazam Magic know how dissapointed I was with the set and Andrew, their manager, has been very kind and helpful. I may be alone in my opinion about the DVD as it has sold over 2,000 copies.

I must say, although I've not seen these dvd's, I've heard others express the same dissapointment, I have had the chance to read some of Nymans lecture booklets, and have a good friend who has used some of the effects, gotta say, I can't understand the hype, far better stuff out there......

I love the set - as although I have Becker's etc stuff - when I tried it the "Nyman" way for fun (e.g. the graphology) - it kills and kills.... then disc 3 was fun to see Darren Brown and Max Maven - but seriously - I liked the little things like the special Nyman cut, his presentation for a Svengali deck... some of his thoughts on audience management - yeah...always similar to other things but still a slightly different angle... and one key thing: how to present a simple trick in a relaxed and fun manner....
I won't be selling mine! (Also, by buying the DVD I didn't end up buying his other effects since you can then make them yourself or in the case of Diceman or the Sophia trick - figure it out yourself based on clues he gives in the DVD (a metagame)... Like Tony says - it grows on ya (Hmm.. I also bought mine here for 1/2 price - so maybe that is why I also liked it a lot - but in retrospect I would have bought it full price)

I have to say I also very much enjoyed the three dvd set.
Above someone says that they didn't care for these DVDs because they already knew the PATEO force etc. so secrets were not revealed to them. Things like the PATEO force are tools. Andy gave us some great routines utilizing them. Above James raves about a trick which we can pretty much assume is the Mr. Saturday Night. He thinks that it is so good that it is put into his act. This is the effect that used the PATEO force. Andy even goes on to say that it is an old force and pretty much not an earth shattering one, but it is that particular routine that makes the PATEO insignificant to the overall routine which draws the audience in and builds the laughs and expectations. I particularly loved the routine with the Mirage deck. Yes, a Mirage deck which has been in magic shops for over 30 years. Now I have a use for mine which has been in a draw for those 30 plus years. |

I've owned 'Get Nyman' for quite a while now and I have to say that I use it more for Andy's presentation skills than the effects themselves. I bought it originally for the method to 'Sophie Trick' but as ownwers of the dvd will know, he only performs the effect.
Andy is Derrens right-hand man and a really, really nice guy. The material he comes out with is strong and very workable, ok it isn't going to fool magicians and mentalist but if you see the work he does for Objective Productions, you will see that he is very capable of some really complicated and fooling effects. He choose those effects for his dvd for a reason, it isn't everyone taste but I'll always have a soft stop for Andy, Diane |

Bitterman - where are you from?
What I saw on his performance disk was a typical British audience reacting in a typically British audience way. I thought he went over very well. He admitted himself that some of the tricks didn't quite suit the room but in the right venue I'm sure they would "kill". Andy is a very accomplished performer (I have seen him "live") and uses his acting skills to augment his magic performances. There is a lot to be learned from these disks. I urge you to give them another watch. Martino.

HI,
I think that Andy appears to suffer because of the normal british reactions of the audience as opposed to the typical L@L audience or general american tv audience reactions Phillip |

As with many mentalist DVDs, non-mentalist have to look past the presentation to the effects and the methods. Then try to incorporate these into ther performing style. First time watching this DVD, I really didn't like it. I didn't see anything, really usuable, but I watched the explaination and got a few things out of it. I don't think it was worth the hype, but I think it wasn't a bad DVD.

Magician 4,
The 2 "hired funnies" as you called them are Pete Firman and Ali Cook, two of television magic's "rising stars" in the UK. They have appeared in 3 or 4 magic series over here. Martino.

You are right martino they are the rising stars of magic. Does anybody know if either of them have released their personal magic to the community?

I've just got this DVD set and I have to say that they are by far the worst set of magic/mentalism DVD's I have ever had the misfortune to watch. Okay, I suppose you get your money's worth in secrets learned (and then I'm not so sure there's anything new) But the performance? Goodness me! A few handpicked friends just about make it for Mr Nyman, and some of them looked bored!
BUT - the teaching session is painful! Why do they let these people loose on teaching their effects. For goodness sake folks - get yourselves on a course in teaching / training / presenting / delivery - anything - just cut the utter drivel and get to the ***** point! Just look at the body language of Pete and Alistair as Nyman consistently heads up Tangent Boulevard. If you expect people to shell out a small fortune for your work, then DO IT PROPERLY! I'm amazed Alakazam - renowned for their quality - allowed this to go out the door. These are heading for Ebay! Be warned! |

Just watched this again.
Even just watching all that's going on is food for thought. And I really like, Mr. Saturday Night. The method seems so simple, but the audience involvement shapes it into something really nice ...
