I have often read negitive as well as positive posts about Cyril , Chris Angel, David Blain ext.....
Why do we as magicians put down others is it because we feel we are better and deserve to be in the spot light?? or is it they have found a gimmick to sell them selves and we have not...?/ I rarely hear a non magician ever doing this,,,, vinny |

I don't think it's unique to magicians. It happens all the time in the performing arts. Even in the sciences . . .

Cgscpa,
that is the story of The Fox and Grapes or, to give it its correct name it is one of Aesops Fables. There are some more important lessons among them. http://www.aesops-fables.org.uk/ Howard |

Good reminder on the story Michael. I noticed the morale of the story being 'IT IS EASY TO SCORN WHAT YOU CANNOT GET.' Too bad the Fox didn't know of and couldn't sing Rolling Stones' 'You Can't Always Get What You Want'. I've always liked that song. Come on everyone! Sing along and don't be shy. Some people can sing that song with all their heart as they've made their peace with it's reality. One should also be careful of what they ask for. Why you ask? Well, you've heard it said that you just may get it! I know what it's like to get what I thought I wanted and found it to be anything but! Hehehe.
Being really honest with myself, I can't remember ever being jealous of a successful performance or performer. Even some of the current biggies in the industry serve as an inspiration and entertainment. What does annoy me, is those who who've yet to study the history of magic and it's entertainment venues, stating that all styles of magic previous to last night's TV episode of street magician are now obsolete and not to be tolerated. The attitude quite similar to the consumer 'in the know' when it comes to say, fashion. Some insisting they would never be caught in last season's line of clothes from designer X as everyone's seen it, been there and done that. Have you noticed some of the Café elders talking about the latest TV magic "reminding" them of either a certain performer or effects from the past? In some cases going back several generations. Yeah some things performed by new performers aern't as new to magic as the performer and his audience are to it. This can have it's positives as well. A smart performer finds all the comfort in the world knowing of such consumer habits and adapts and caters to it. Vinny I've seen a couple of your moves and was truley entertained. Good magic man! It was so good, there was no room for jealousy. Just wonder. Good old fashioned wonder. |

Sometimes it may be because they know the methods and therefore see the effect as no big deal. There be a few things they don't like about a certain magician. Appearance, attitude, presentation, etc. Non-magicians put others down and point fingers just as well as magicians. Envy is the big one in my opinion. |

David Blaine has a lot going for him, charisma and dynamic energy are not on the list. I don't put magicians down because I think I'm better. I think I'm probably the "Saliari" of magic. (Posted that once on alt.magic and actually managed to quiet Mark Lewis for a little while!) I do put them down because I see other magicians who I think are better both skill-wise and performance style-wise (They are two separate things) and feel <they're> not getting the recognition they deserve.

Its not always simple jealousy. Often we see a fellow magician do something simple/old fashioned (Blaine) or over dramatic (Angel) or strange and unusual (cyril) and get a huge reaction from laypeople.
After one layperson to many saying "see that blaine guy?" its very tempting to shout "ITS FROM BOBOS YOU IDIOT!" Its not jealousy, its just that we have seen behind the curtain and some of the magic is lost. |
