Hi all,
We have had a sick dove for about 2 months. Let me describe to you the problem and what we have done so far and then I'd appreciate any feedback/suggestions. The dove began sitting on the bottom of it's cage (its a he), and not jumping up to eat or drink. We noticed this and, at the same time, noticed that he seemed to have difficulty balancing. We began putting him up on his perch, since he wouldn't jump, and he would still eat and drink and go across the perch to the other dish, but he would not jump up to it on his own. We gave him two rounds of two different antibiotics over the course of 2 weeks per the instructions and advice of our local pet store owner who has 2 doves that are over 9 years old. We also have a heating pad under one side of the cage for warmth. The dove began cooing again a few days ago, but it still would not get up on its perch. About 2 days ago, I was looking at his feet and noticed that the back nail was longer than the three front ones on both feet and that the back claw was laying sideways instead of up and down. So we trimmed the toe nails, (just a little, enough to make them even with the front ones). Now, he seems to lose his balance even worse. The pet store owner said that he may have to get use to walking the right way, but he doesn't seem to be improving. We have lost a dove several months ago that got sick, after several months of hand feeding it etc. I don't want to lose another one, but it is a bit frustrating to not know what else to do. Just so everyone knows, we have several birds, snakes, spiders, scorpions, a cat, etc., and we have never had any trouble with any of them-except these two doves. As of right now, the dove is getting vitamins in its water as well. I am open to any suggestions-we want our little guy to get better. Thanks in advance, Chad |

Chad, sounds like you have done all the right things with the exception of getting advice from a pet shop. Doves are very susceptible to infections, bronchitis and lung problems. While the antibiotics the pet shop owner suggested won't do the dove any harm, since it has been in this condition for months, I'd suggest you take him to a vet who handles avian. Not all vets are qualified to diagnos or treat birds.

Hi Chad
Please go to vetafarm in Aust. to get the Amtyl Tablet OR Tony's Treasure tablet...this most likely will cure the birds..... e.g the most commmon Respiratory problem, they too have a product just made for this....This medicine tablets are made JUST for Doves & Pigeon ONLY by VET for doves........many dove products are availability too....they are the BEST in the business for dove products! Even the owner of Foys Pigeon supplies(Greg Frewin's suppliers for his dove products), the Largest & Oldest dove business in USA...Highly Recommened Vetafarm products.... If you live in USA...u may get directly from Foys Pigeon Supplies at their website. Understand your concern, I too sometimes have problems....BUT plesase do not to too any pet & Bird shop locally & ask them for advice..., most of the time, they have no idea what they are selling or talking...WHY: cos they have variety of birds...unless those expert in selling doves only.... trust me, Vetafarm for doves & Foys Pigeon Supplies is the ONLY way to seek help if you have sick doves, give them a ring & tell them the problem, both are very helpful & will give you the remedy on what is the best thing to buy on the spot, hope this helps P/S: But they can't help much if the doves are old age...once doves hit 9-10 years, they are consider old...but NOT very old..cos some doves live up to 22 years old. 4 of my oldest is 9-10 years...though is still healthy...but not as active as they were young...old dove who is sick, is a little hard to cure & takes time. Warmest Regards dove-boy |

Hi all,
I thought you might like an update on my sick dove. After a month of being down and out, he is now perching, on his own, on his perch and drinking and eating without any encouragement. We are sooooo relieved and happy. Thanks for all the advice! Chad |
