I remeber the episode well. What is the first picture?
Did you build a replica of the prop? Buy the TV prop? Or am I missing something? Dave |

I don't mean to rain on your parade, but doesn't one of the networks own the rights to the Twilight Zone? Be careful about advertising these things, unless you have obtained the rights to them.

Also - does it work ????
Hmm... I suppose having a card index and some palming skill one can do a card-cold reading thing...although it would be cool to build something can spit out the desired fortunes.... PW and NW wouldn't work as a machine would pop out printed materials I figure.... I suppose a sell-the-soul routine could be worked into this as well...

I'd put a stack-type dispenser that would spit out the fortunes.
Before the piece gets brought out by an assisant, I'd have some of the audience write out their name and questions that would produce a definitive answer from a fortune and gather them up. I'd tell them that these would be in use later. The assisant would take them and choose the best ones that fit the fortunes. Then the assisant would stack the fortunes and the questions so that they matched. After that, the assisant would bring out the mystic seer and give the questions to the performer. The performer would call out the name and ask the person to read the question out loud. Then the person would insert a penny and get the matched fortune. Some audience management would be necessary, in order to not get duplicate questions. Perhaps by viewing the questions before gathering them up, one could ask a person to write a different question. Using guided direction could help in nudging people to write the questions that you want to get. This is an idea that I just thought of, off the top of my head. Feel free to shoot it down... Regards, Dave |

Another thought... If you want absolute certainy that the questions will match the fortunes. Have Moe, Larry and Curly write the questions.

Per an email from the maker:
The MS machine does not dispense the fortune slips as there is no mechanism inside. The lever is spring loaded and the napkin holders also have springs so they will hold napkins. Any coins put in the slot goes into a large center area, so it can be used as a bank. The lock on the front will unlock the back panel. Keys are provided. |

Thanks Slim - no doubt your post will get erased - but at least some of us got to see it... (ala Twilight Zone - "When the Sky Opened" - one of my favourite episodes - and often a Magic Café phenomena!)...

Hi slim
"Wonder if you can get the episode on DVD? " yep it is possible in a , volume 9 of the dvd series, the episode title is "Nick of Time", a very good episode about superstitions plots : "The hand belongs to Mr. Don S. Carter, male member of a honeymoon team en route across the Ohio countryside to New York City. In one moment, they will be subjected to a gift most humans never receive in a lifetime. For one penny, they will be able to look into the future. The time is now, the place is a little diner in Ridgeview, Ohio, and what this young couple doesn't realize is that this town happens to lie on the outskirts of the Twilight Zone." While waiting for their car to be repaired, Don and Pat grab a quick meal at a local diner. A table top fortune-telling machine catches Don's eye. Although the answers are extremely general, Don soon believes the machine has accurately predicted two events - his promotion, and a near-accident he and Pat have while crossing the street. Don panics and begins feeding pennies into the machine. Pat convinces him that they must make their own future, without the machine. Don comes to his senses, and the couple leaves. Soon after they leave, another couple hurry into the diner and begin putting pennies in the machine. They ask when they might be allowed to leave town. "Counterbalance in the little town of Ridgeview, Ohio. Two people permanently enslaved by the tyranny of fear and superstition, facing the future with a kind of helpless dread. Two others facing the future with confidence - having escaped one of the darker places in the Twilight Zone." I really like the idea of showing this episode as a part of a bizarre magic routine with a replica of the fortune telling machine off course Was just asking myself about the possibilites beind such a fortune teller: card revelation ? "free will" like routine ? etc by the way this replica on ebay went for 200 hundred dollars ..i think it worth the price as it's a pretty good work. But What about some improvement to make it more "bizarre"?:)and more "for magician made " than it is now |

Check out Shane's Pentalogy - he has a little Zoltar fortune teller presentation - easily could be adapted to Nick

The one on eBay went for 202 CANADIAN dollars. That's about 75¢ in $USD
Actually, it's just about $175 USD. If you showed the episode from the Twilight Zone, you would run into two problems. 1) If you are performing for profit, you would have to pay a royalty, and that is if you can get permission to do it. 2) It would be basically a 20 minute introduction to a routine. That's even longer than anything Punx did. WAAAAY TOOOO LOOOOONG.
