BTP is a great DVD for a beginner. Oz is an excellent teacher. I don't understand all the negativity towards him in the past. This DVD has everything that you would need as a beginner in card magic.

For what it's worth here is my advice.
Buy Royal Road To Card Magic, practice each chapter for one month, then treat yourself (one per month) to Ammar's card miracle dvd series. I am fairly new to card magic too and am having a great time following this course of action. Ammar's series contains many superb easy to perform effects as well as slightly more advanced material, saying that, this month I have broken from the routine and ordered Kaufmans dvd on basic card technique as some of the sleights used in Ammar's series do not appear in RRTCM and Ammar hiself only really toutches on them. Good luck. |

Oz is good and this DVD has its own merits in teaching various card effects that so many beginners are eager to learn. Of course, this DVD's before Paul Wilson's RRTCM DVDs. I think the negativity toward Oz in the past is largely due to his association with PenguinMagic.

It is a GREAT FIRST PURCHASE if you are limited on how much you can spend. As for Penguin, eveyone has to make their own choices. I personally do not buy from them anymore..... I support my local brick and mortar shop, and I buy from other well established brick and mortar shops that have invested in the Internet. |

Although I'm sure there are many wonderful books on card magic, there's a big difference between reading how something's done and actually seeing it in motion, especially for beginners. Once you're comfortable with the basic sleights books are great, but if you miss the basics - or worse yet, learn to perform them incorrectly - I fear it would be a long road to recovery. Sort of like learning a 'bad' golf swing and then having to 'un-learn' it after your first professional lesson.

Not to resurrect a semi dead topic but KAUFMAN's video is so painful to watch I can't learn from him. Who ever told him that it looked COOL and Contemporary was dead wrong . I am not saying Kaufman is a bad teacher it was just a very poor choice in presenting it very akin to Sankey's Boris Pocus character.
