Most methods of controlling a spectators card require the spectator to return the card with the help of the magician. From my experiance this has aroused suspicion after a few effects and the spectators usually try to trick me into loosing their card. I was wondering if you guys can help me find natural ways for the spectator to return the card to the deck. Have you guys had this problem?

Use a stripper deck. Have them put it anywhere. Strip away ...
And study up on pinkie grips. Best Wishes, Dave

More laypeople know about stripper decks than you would imagine. Magic stores like to catch attention by showing off stripper and svangeli decks to people in order to make sales. People who know about stripper decks may choose to carefully examine the deck you use. By using a regular deck you remove any methods that some spectators may be knowledgable enough to propose. I even know a few friends who have stripper decks lying around in their homes! Furthermore, people who have a background in magic will be more impressed if they believe you are using a regular deck. If you perform for many people, I don't know if stripper decks are a good idea. Although they may come in handy from time to time, I would refrain from relying on one.

I haven't had a problem like this.
How are they trying to trick you into losing the card? You should be the one in control and guiding them as to what they're to do is part of it. Anyway.. One way to avoid this would be to force the card. This way you already know the card. They can shuffle and you can cull the card as you comment on how well they shuffled. Another method would be to palm the card out, have them shuffle and then replace the the card as you take the deck back. A quick crimp or a glimpse of the card can save the day too. |

Thanks for your reply Jaz. But wouldn't you agree that some effects require to control the card to the top/bottom/etc. Knowing the card would not help in this case unless you look through the deck.

I agree and PMed you.
You state that: Quote:

If this may be the case I suggest that one of these is enough for a short routine and maybe two for longer ones. I'd still like to know how they are trying to trick you into losing the card? Also, why would they?? |

As I said before, the spectator usually has to place the card back into the deck with the help of the magician. After a few effects, some spectators try to burie the card into the deck instead of placing the card into the position offered by the magician. They sense that I might be controlling their card. I don't do to many pick a card effects, but I get this problem from people who frequently see me performing magic. Dan

So, you're saying that if you cut the deck for them to replace the card on the lower half that they will try and push it in the deck elsewhere?
If so, don't let them push it in all the way. You finish and do a slip or 'Diagonal Push Through'. How do you hold the cards for replacement? As above? In a split fan? Or are they taking the deck from you and replacing the card any where they want? |

It depends on the situation. We can go on for hours talking about this. I am simply interested to know if there is a way for a spectator to return a card into a spread without having the magician open it first or tamper with the card after it has entered the deck. Thanks for your help Jaz.

OK Danny. You have worn us out. You let your spectators carefully examine the cards you use (Why?), you want to impress people who have a background in magic (Rookie performing for Magicans!) by demonstrating that you are using a normal deck (Why?), and if you perform for many people a stripper deck is a bad idea (Practice and Learn how to handle a gaffed deck.) I want to be polite here, but what is the point until you learn how to handle cards and create a presentation in the most basic fashion. Your "People who have a background in Magic" will be really impressed when you can do anything well that is entertaining. Buy a copy of "Fechter, The Magic of Eddie Fechter." It is 265 pages of professional card handling. Read it, and then come back to the forum next year with an educated question.

Danny:
Have them just touch a card in the spread. Seperate the pack at that point, show them the touched card (which they never remove from the pack) then square the pack and control the card in whichever way you would like. - entity

You can always make like this(sometimes I used that and its good):
you spread the cards and you say : touch one card... the spectator touched this card and you don't give him this card just show him... and when you do this you secretly put one card on the top of his selection(and now we have a double) now you put his(that what the spectetor thought) card in the middle of the deck... and seclected card is still on the top Ohh is so hard to describe this... but try it is very good
You can get further with a kind word and a gun than you can with just a kind word.

Not sure if Paul LePaul's Automatic Jog Control meets your requirements. You fan the cards, spectator replaces card into the fan anywhere they like (they can push it ALL the way in), close the fan and you have the card controlled. It is a personal favourite and is described in the Card Magic of LePaul and on Vol.2 of Daryl's card sleights series.

The best card tricks are the ones where the magician seemingly never touches the deck. The spectator or an assistant handles the deck and the selected card/cards and I don't touch the deck until after the card is returned. They can be performed with a borrowed deck. One of them I perform is where three spectators only think of a card and I find the cards in a brand new unopened deck. I learned it from Dick Staub it's the best card trick I perform. The other two are called quick as a wink which is in Karl Fulves self working card tricks and Get thee Behind me Satan in the Encyclopedia of Card Tricks..
