Hello everyone,
I was considering having someone draw a magic poster of myself. I found out about a company that will draw a picture of you, and turn it into a magician poster. Their website is: http://www.magiciancards.com/ They print your poster on business cards, but I am not interested in that. I just wanted to get a poster with them. If you have ever done business with them or think that this is a good idea please let me know. The custom poster design is only $99.00. Thanks! -Ray |

Ray,
This is just my own personal opinion but I felt like posting it here since you were asking about the website and company mentioned above. Although they do design posters that reflect the old style look, I feel what they are showing on the site is just ethically and morally wrong. Let me explain if I can. They are not doing anything illegal by any means. The old posters and lithographs are not copyrighted and have long since beocme public domain. However there are several things I find wrong about going this route. 1) Is that the posters they create or show as examples are exact copies and duplicates of famous posters from the past. This to me is plagorism and as an artist myself, it is a disrespect to the artist who originally came up with the poster design in the first place. I know that I would never want anyone duplicating or stealing my designs so I would never do the same to others regardless of whether or not I have a copyright on it or not. To me it is just a wrong thing to do. 2) The posters being exact duplicates of the old time posters does not serve you as well as they should. I want people to remember me for who I am (Kyle Peron). I do not want my target audience to remember me as Houdini or to think I am trying to be Kellar. Each magician is unique and the materials we create for ourselves should also be unique to ourselves. 3) With you choosing from hundreds of old time posters, who is to say that several magicians may end up having the exact same card or poster design derived from an old time poster that is really not theirs to take from? You end up with magicians having the same branded look and appearance. A maician can have a poster designed to look like an old time magic lithograph and that can be done easily. However, the designer or artist should respect the works of other artists from the past and design a poster that has the same look and feel as an old poster but does not duplicate it exactly. An artist would see what type faces were used back then, what colors and research it to develop a poster that is new and unique but has the feel of the old style posters. This way you end up with a poster or artwork that is unique to you and what you offer. Now do not get me wrong here. I want to make it clear that what they are offering and doing is not illegal at all. It is perfectly legit and they can do what they do. They also do a very good job of it as well. My problem lies in the fact that they are directly stealing from these old time posters and I feel that is just not a right way to go about marketing yourself or making yourself unique in your marketplace. Just my humble opinion is all and if you feel that that is what you are looking for, then I would certainly go that direction. They do good work and the quality is good. They probably also will do posters for you as well if you ask. It just comes down to whether or not this exact duplicate of an old time poster is what you want to brand your magic. Kyle

Hi All,
I actually found a local artist to do a pic of- see my avatar to your left. I find that although you'll pay a bit more, it's more than worth it. You get the whole personalized experience and it will be completely original. Just my 2 cents, Jamie D. Grant

They're fun to look at and might look nice on the office wall, but for real life use seem a little dated. I'm with Kyle on this one. If you're going to have a poster designed make it you own!!

Jamie's avatar is the perfect example of what I am talking about when a deisgner takes the ideas and principles of an old time poster but does not steal the direct design of another artist. You can see that it is unique and original for Jamie but has the feel and style of an old time poster. This to me works a lot better. Just my humble opinion is all.

Personally I think you are looking at it from a magician centric position. These posters are so old that most of the current generation of laymen aren't going to know that they are old posters being reused. I like the idea and I think that it gets the attention today as well as it did back then.

I'm sorry,
but when I first looked at that site, I thought it was a spoof site! Like bad celebrity porn, badly sized heads cut and paste at odd angles onto other bodies. But it was fun to look at the old posters. |

My point is not that fact that the lay audience would not know who it is or that it is a copy. You are most right in that the lay audience would have no clue. My point is that I would KNOW that it is a ripoff and that it is stealing from another famous magician of the past. I also would know that it is stealing from another past artist who spent a great deal of time developing the poster in the first place.
Although the lay audience would never know, just the fact that I myself know that it is stealing from someone else, would make me not want to go down this path. To me it is just wrong to copy and steal from another performer. The artist in me also knows that it is morally wrong to steal from thework of another artist past or present. I would much rather create something totally new that represents me better as unique as I am. If I want a poster with an old style theme, I can create one of have a designer create one that has that feel without having to steal from a poster of the past. A good designer or artist will always be able to do this while respecting the work of others. Just my opinion. Kyle

Tel,
Yes I do actually. However, I want to be clear that that really was not my intention of this post. I just wanted to express an opinion as an artist and as a magician that I just feel strongly that copying other artists work.. either past or present to me is just not right. I wanted to point out that an artist can take ideas from the past but it is the duty and job of the designer to interpret this information in a totally new way. However, if you would like to see samples of what I do, just send me over a PM and I would be happy to share them with you. Thanks. Kyle
