Fifty-nine bucks for a fanning powder pen, when a small paper bag will do the job, not to mention the markup on the powder itself,is outrageous!
To anyone that bought one: I have a bridge in Brooklyn that I am willing to sell. Bill

Geographic question:
Isn't Ash-Pen a town in Colorado? (or is this post just a pen in the ash?) |

I initially thought it to be a quite stupid investment to buy an ash pen, but I got one recently out of curiosity.
There is some good presentation advice in the little booklet that comes along. Variation on materials and a method for transferring the symbol to the audience member. At least you can see that the "inventor" spent some time on the ash revelation and the pen. The pen itself has a good form factor to be used during the presentation itself. I'm personally positive about the purchase. |

The Guy bavli one isn't just an ash pen, and probably offers the best impromtu yet clean way of doing an ashes on arm effect - even in a T shirt.

Just My two cents worth here, but I know the prop itself isn't worth anywhere near
the asking price, but they also are selling secrets i.e. a routine. If you look at other examples in the magic industry like The "Clasic" magic trick Equal Unequal Ropes (Which I've heard is concidered by many a briliant effect) has sold for anywhere from $5.00 to $15.oo, consider the props you are getting with this effect. It is still for sale, and it still sells. I feel this is Grossly over priced for the prop you recieve, but it is the secret that matters. If it is worth it to a new magician who doesn't know how to do this with other materials, and it does do exactly what they claim it does, then where is the foul??? True any magician who has been arround will most likely use alternate methods to achieve the same effect, but some will buy it for the convience of it. Any way that's my "Devil's Advocate" impersonation for the week. Ocha

I was quite disappointed in the ash pen from a value standpoint. It was extraordinarily overpriced and the instructions consisted of perhaps 3 paragraphs with little information that was not common knowledge.

I use the Ash Pen in my regular close-up routines and mental act. It has never failed me. I use coffee grounds for my reveal. I also use Elecric Touch to had a little drama to the effect.

Magic being over priced? Of course it is; it's a matter of dollars and sense.
If someone saw the potential in a common , inexpensive item; to use it for a magic trick. They should be reimbursed for sharing their creativity. Magicians on the other hand should use better common sense. In some ways it is our own despiration that rewards dealer greed. In the case of the ash effect, you know the methods from the past. THink of a logical sibstitute, and you have created an ash pen. I Don't own one/ never saw one or its ad. But I perhaps; Peek-a-boo Street could make a suggestion KOtah |

Re: Perceived value, and the 200 sandwich. Supply and demand aren't always ethical. during the Yukon gold rush, one chicken egg could easily cost three dollars.

And three dollars was worth a lot more back then!

The moral? Capitalism is healthy for ambitious (or lucky) individuals, but needs to be "checked" and constrained by other systems for the good of the whole; a hybrid of capitalism/socialism seems about the best system so far. I wouldn't want either in it's pure form, allowed to run amuck.
Just hanging out with the rest of my fellow dregs.

Yeah I own Ash Pen. Now that I have bought it. And I know what it is. I don't feel bad for using something else as a replacement. Good thing is it lasts a really long time. So it will be awhile before that happens.

You may not even need to buy it for a dollar or two since you will find it in most places you are going to perform. Yet I experienced a few times that one or two of the letters to be revealed were not so clearly visible as I would have liked them to be. This did not ruin the trick but it took away quite a bit of the impact. It may not be such a bad investment to make a strong effect more foolproof. |

Yes the guy bavli ash pen is certainly worth the money it only costs a lowly $20 !
- and performs so much better than the cheap substitute you all mention. this effect is so so strong, why mess it up, with unclear impressions? - its a no brainer, buy the guy bavili ash pen complete with the little booklet giving invaluable performance tips. Steve |
