Hi Everyone.
I wanna do the shell game on the street for entertainment purposes, but was wondering, how would the people know you do it for entertainment, and not for the money? I wanna let people know that I'm a magician. Not a con man. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks. All the best, Michael |

Don't take bets. Say repeatedly that this is for entertainment only.
Tell it in the form of a story where you got conned. The spectators will be impressed that it wasn't where they thought it was and you don't have the embarassment where someone points to a shell, gets it wrong and feels silly. Ali

I think Bob Sheets has the perfect answer for that on his video. He uses 3 colored poker chips; one green, one yellow and one red. The green goes first and the one holding red goes last. He also has some great comebacks for the bystanders who think they know where the pea is. His video is worth a look.

Try it in a form of a routine. Bob Kohler has a great presentation in his Golden Shells video. Check out the link below.
Good luck and have fun! Will http://www.bobkohlermagic.com/vcom/produ......ts_id=66 |

Check your local codes unless you like spending some quality time with the local authorities.

That pretty much goes for any street magic act.
Most cities require a stree vendor's license for stuff like that. In San Antonio, if you do that kind of stuff on the riverwalk... BAM!!! it's like a 600 or an 800 dollar fine, if you don't have the license. And even if you do have the license, they'll still come around and hassle you, even if you aren't doing it for pay.

A guy in Seattle went to court with the city over freedom of speech rights and won a sizeable $$$ settlement. Someone might want to put San Antonio to the test.
The city can fine you for performing for free? Are you sure???? Maybe Texas isn't so great afterall. |

When I use to do the shell game, for money, down in MIA there were all sorts of different police. Some would arrest you, some would tell you to move along, and some would walk right by. But you never which type's gonna come around at any given time. I think it's a waste to try and get permission. Just set up and put out a sign that says "play for free" or something that makes it obvious you're not trying to take people. If the cops have a problem, the most they could do is probably tell you to pack it up. Have fun.

Liberty were you using shells or bottletops?
|

I was using botteltops, a rubber band ball, and black cardboard. That's what I always used for working. But I also own about every shell set on the market that I know about. Just for the personal collection.

I worked with two other guys and a girl. I also worked a monte game with the same guys. I would never reccomend working either game alone. I useualy do any dice or card work alone, but never 3sg or 3cm.

A lot of times someone will give it up after a couple losses against an operator by himself because they can see they'll never win. And anyone watching that guy lose isn't gonna want to put down their money either. But when they see other people winning, and they see how easy it is, they get greedy and want to play more. Also, you have the other players over-betting them the whole time which makes them keep trying to bet more and more money. Until they finaly get to lay down their bet and lose everything.
It really comes down to making more money and having a couple people on your back. It's just good business. |
