What is the best place for a beginner, like me, to learn the basics of three card monte and the shell game, and other similar things? All help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Cody |

Go to School...
The School for Scoundrels. I can honestly say that I believe that no one is doing a better job teaching the ancient swindles such as 3-CM, 3 Shell and Fast and Loose as Whit Haydn and Chef Anton are. http://www.chefanton.com/scoundrelsstore/menu.htm There are plenty of sources. (you can learn 3 card monte from "Expert at the Card Table" as well as Hugards book, for example) But I think for an absolute beginner, you would do well to check out the School for Scoundrels stuff. Thanks for the info. How do those compare to the Sal Piacente stuff?

I love Sal Piacente, and his DVD's are good. But the SFS stuff blows his stuff (on 3-CM and 3-Shell) out of the water. It's just much more thorough.
If you start with the Piacente stuff and enjoy it, you will likely want the SFS stuff. And once you get the SFS stuff you won't be going back to look at the Piacente stuff. Because the SFS stuff has everything that Sal offers, and a whole lot more. Vandy

So if I get the SFS stuff, I don't even need to get the Piacente stuff?

That's right. The SFS stuff has everything Sal's has, and more. I have both but I got Sal's stuff first. If had got the SFS stuff first I probably would have never gotten the Piacente material.
As I said, they are both good. But the SFS stuff is much more complete. Vandy

So does the SFS stuff just teach the three card monte and the shell game? Just want to make sure. Thanks for the help.

SfS has DVDs and books for each of the classic con games. No, they don't "just" teach 3CM and the Monte. They have other materials as well. The best thing to do is go to http://www.schoolforscoundrels.com and have a look around.

Which DVD should I pick up first?

I can't answer that for you. What do you want to learn? They're all equally good.

Ok, I just wanted to make sure that there wasn't something that a beginner like me should learn first, but I guess I'll just choose what seems more appealing to me.

I suggest that you go to the scoundrels forum. Go there and download my routine in PDF format. Watch Whit do his shell routine at the w. c. Fields bar at the magic castle in wmf video format. And there is more tons more information about the shells and three card monte.
All for free at the scoundrels forum. Then go to the s4s site and get (one of many) a DVD about it. And look over more nice shell sets that any magician would think is available to buy at one site. Choose one there all great. This was a public service anouncement. I hope this helps.

Sal does have a very different personality from the old west charm of the School for Scoundrals and if you have a chance to watch his stuff, it is very entertaining.
But for moves, you can't go past S4S! |
