Hey guys,
I was just wondering, I know a lot of us use stage tricks to witness, but are there any here that use grand illusion? if so, what tricks do you use and how do you present it? Just curious.

Kevin Ridgeway and Kristen Johnson do. You can check out there site here - http://www.livingillusions.com
Duane Laflin uses illusions some times. He's written about how he presents them in his book "Greater Gospel Magic." It may be OOP since it's not listed on their site anymore - http://www.lockfamilymagic.com Of course, I can't not (don't you love double negatives?) mention Andre Kole - http://www.andrekole.org and http://www.andrekoleshow.com There are others, but those are the ones I have links for.

Yes, we do grand illusions and large escapes as part of our show. Our message does not necessarily revolve around any large illusion though. The illusions are used to build rapport with the audience, hopefully gaining the repsect and that they will then listen to what we have to share.
Our message specifically revolves around the multi media we use and a video of a true life story. We then wrap that up, with of all things...a very small trick that plays huge. Amazing how with a Freighliner full of illusions, Water Torture Cell, lighting, rigging, sound etc, that a simple trick small enough to fit in my hand brings the message to life, even in the largest of venues. You can see our tour dates on our website. Hope to catch up with some of you around the country. Kevin & Kristen

I don't perform it (yet) but I have always dreamed of a subtrunk presentation where a person is bound by a figure representing sin, put in the case, and a Christ figure comes to release the captive and take his/her place. It is as if the illusion was written with the theology of substitionary atonement in mind.

Revlovejoy,
We do that very thing and have for years. It works great but took soome time to get the balance right so we don't slow down our trick with the patter and we don't minimize the message or over power it with the illusion. We have after 15 years, got it to a powerful illustration& illusion. We also (brief explanations) use a head chopper and discuss the fact that someone had to put faith in me, someone they don't know for this trick to become something I can share with others. Christ only asks for faith to share His sacrifice with us. And we use the temple of Benares to illustrate satan attacks us day by day but if we put our life in God's hands He will protect us and change our lives. (My wife does a costume change). Hope this helps. Something similar may come to mind for you. I would not copy someone else's routine. As I said it took many years of work on each of these illusions to make them effective. My advise is to do what we did. Search your spirit and through prayer and study, determine what message does God want you to share. How specifically does He want you to present His message? Then look to the huge selection of tricks and illusions to find the best way for you to communicate His word. God will, as He promises, give you the words to speak when the time is right. He will open your mind and spirit to allow Him to work through you. don't allow your impression of an illusion or someone else's show to get in your way of being the best witness you can through your program. Also, don't allow yourself to be less professional or less of a showman in the name of "a good solid presentation of the Gospel". Be sure you do your best at both and give it your all. Doesn't The Almight God who created us deserve our best in every area of our life/performance? Curt P.S. Didn't mean to preach, sorry. |
