This is the same material that was in a DVD set that they released a while back, only now it's one DVD and they have decided to promote it again.

This “Balloon School” DVD used to be a set of DVDs called “Burning Rubber”. Burning Rubber was originally released in November of 2004. The demo video they have now for Balloon School, is the exact same one they used when the Burning Rubber set was available. Looks to me like a repackaging (now one disc and with a new name) and a fresh attempt at promoting it.

Burning Rubber was never released. We had shot a demo video called Burning Rubber, and posted it to the Penguin Magic site. That project was not completed, and put on hold. We've not got a final product that we are very happy with. It is now titled Balloon School, and is available for pre-order.
Thank you, Sam Blankenship CEO Penguin Magic |

I was very disappointed in Balloon School. The information on this DVD is incomplete at best, and some of the information is just plain bad.
For good material, I agree with Mr. Tivoli. Go to http://tmyers.com and check out his selection of books, videos, and DVDs. T. Myers if famous for his honest reviews of the products he carries. In fact many people have chosen not to sell through him once they saw the review he had written for their product. And if you really want a complete education in balloon twisting, go to http://www.davidgrist.com/ David Grist's DVDs are the closest thing that you will find to a complete education in the art of balloon twisting, and should be in the library of every balloon twister. They are to balloon art what the Tarbell Course is to Magic.

I purchased this dvd and for the cost (aound $50) I think it covers the basics up to the advanced stuff very well and gives good insight into other aspects such as developing an act, working for large audiences and so on. I agree it doesn't contain everything, but for what it claims to be, I think it delivers the goods! |

“Hello. My name is Joe Montella, Master Balloon Sculptor.”
“By The end of this you are going to know all the basics, your also going to know how to make all the advanced stuff, and you are going to know how to sell yourself.” “This DVD is going to give you all of the skills you need to be in the top 20% of balloon twisters in the country. You are, right now going to be among the best of the best.” I think that those three statements are my biggest problem with this DVD. Had Balloon School been presented as a beginners DVD with some primer material for intermediate twisting, it would have been fine. But Joe makes some pretty bold claims on this DVD. For someone who is supposed to be a master balloon sculptor, Joe makes a lot of rookie mistakes. For example, he claims that pinch twists are tricky because they will often pop or loose air. Most good twisters know that by pulling the bubble that you are pinch twisting away from the other bubbles as you twist it, you can avoid the undue wear on the bubble that causes those problems. The poodle tail is another good example. I know of three ways to make a poodle tail. Of those three Joe teaches one, and it is the most time consuming and sloppiest of them. Even as a beginning or intermediate twisting course there are a number of important techniques that are omitted. No role through (aka Bird Body) No Tulip Twist No Spiraling a balloon No Braiding What is more, I have seen every one of these sculptures taught elsewhere before, and taught better. The idea that this DVD will teach someone everything that they need to be a professional twister is like telling someone that with a Svengali deck, a hotrod, and scotch & soda they can be a professional magician. You can have a lot of fun, and you may even get some paying gigs. But the first time your clients sees someone who really knows what they are doing, you are out. I also disagree with his business advice, but that is more a matter of personal taste and style. Everyone has their own approach and his is just not my cup of tea. Please do not get me wrong. I actually like Joe’s teaching style, and I love the enthusiasm that he conveys to the viewer. He really makes you feel like you can take on the world with a bag of balloons. I just don’t think that he delivers on the techniques and sculptures.

Message to all...
I want to thank you all for commenting on my DVD I did many years ago... Actually it was 13yrs ago long before youtube or many other balloon DVDS. I hope I provided value to all who purchased it. There are some new and amazing balloon DVDs out there and who knows maybe I will even create a new updated version. That DVD took all of two days to shoot and two years to get edited and ready for sale... Maybe someday I will tell the whole story. Thanks for all the thoughts and comments (good and bad) it is very appreciated to hear. |
