Maybe this idea has been posted before, but I've got a method for making a side table that is really easy. And, it's much cheaper than buying a Eureka base.
Order a cymbal stand from an online music supply store (or visit a local music store). Cymbal stands are really stable. Think about it. They are designed to be beaten with a drum stick! I've bought these for as little as $12 bucks and never more than $20. Cymbal Stands: steveweissmusic.com musiciansfriend.com With a hacksaw, cut off the cymbal attachment and attach a threaded male compression fitting. They are easy to find at your hardware store. It will cost you about $2-$5 bucks. You'll probably need a 1/2" one. Here's a link to an example of what you might want to use: Threaded fitting: coleparmer.com Get it at a local store so you can make sure it is what you need. Then, get a "floor flange" that matches what size threaded fitting you bought- probably half inch. Again, it will cost $3 bucks or so. Here's a link to a picture of one: Floor Flange Picture: media.doitbest.com Attach it to a piece of wood for your tabletop and you're "good to go!" Use a tablecloth or decorate the wood to your liking. You can easily have do the entire project on a Saturday afternoon for about $20 bucks or so! Attached is a picture of mine. Hope this helps! Thanks for sharing. Wish I saw this before buying my table base.

Before going to the trouble of sawing off pieces of the cymbal stand, you might also check into what's called a "trap" stand. It's basically a table (usually padded) with the same kind of tripod base a cymbal stand has. It's used to place tambourines, triangles, woodblocks, etc. on but I bet one of these would make a nice magic table.

Nice idea. I've just done mine. Instead of cutting the cymbal stand I bought a piece of 19mm chrome tube and used that. This sold as towel rack in the local hardware.
I should have thought of this earlier, having worked for an orchestra and set up many traps tables. Thanks forthe tip. |

That gives me an idea about a table I want to build. The plans are actually in an old MUM and they are very very easy to follow. I always steared clear of making the table because it called for the stands sold in magic shops. These seem to be just as good and a whole lot cheaper. Thanks for the info and now I must go and spend more money. I am so glade I am not married..she would kill me if she found out how much I have spent in the last 6 months on my new kids show. Lol

I recently went to a Michael Amma lecture and he taught us how to make a tbale for about $25- .. It was a very clever idea. If anyone has seen this you will know what I mean.

Ah SteveMT you have to do what I did. Hitch up to a performer. My partner's in the show, and is the main creative force. Then all you have to do is make sure that she doesn't spend all the money!

I once used a barrel lid and took three long dowel rods and tied them together in the center. Then, I spread the ends of the rods and positioned them under the lid, with the lip of the lid keeping the rods from spreading further. It makes for a nice but cheap table, especially if you put a drape over it.

I bought a brand new rolling table off ebay for $25. Comes apart too for transport.
I would not perform cups and balls off of the table but it's a great rolling table for the stage, etc.

It too low to be practical. that's the problem with most "store bought" tables.

I use a standard keyboard stand. They can be purchased cheaply online. They are very sturdy. I can then place any tabletop or my close up case. In trade show work, I place a small sheet of glass that I can use for my coin through glass routine.

I also have a keyboard stand and made a few minor tweaks.
I removed the spring loaded gizmo that adjusts the stand. I added leather straps accross the stand to make it both adjustable and collapsable just by folding it up. More like a buskers table. I plan on putting wheels on it plus hooks to hold a table and extras so you can drag the darn thing around but have yet to do so.
