Forward, Backward, Idle, Jump, Bigger jump I reckon that learning to ride backward is harder than idling and that many BMX and trials cyclists will find it easier to do jumps (bunny-hops) than to ride forward. I suggest that you should try forward, free-mount, bunny-hop, idle, backward, bigger jump, etc. Nigel Not that I do most of these but I know a lot of people that do.

Yeah, I can see what you say.
You can learn "bunny-hops" without being able to ride the uni-cycle in the ordinary way. And for idling and riding backwards, I still think both is hard and swich between them while practising on the unicycle. What do you call "free-mount" ? |

A free-mount is when you get on the unicycle without holding on to any wall or whatever. The skill you need for this is half way to idling.

My experience was similar to itshim's - learning to kick back on the upper pedal when free mounting is a good way to get the feel of idling, if only for a second or two before learning forward and going for it. Riding backwards still eludes me, although, I can feel myself getting better and better each time... not enough to do it, but, getting there!
I'd recommend Charlie Dancy's "How To Ride Your Unicycle" to anyone looking for basic instruction in unicycling- it covers getting started / learning to ride, free mounts, idling / hovering and some fancier bits. (ISBN: 1-898591-18-0) |
