Doug,
The great irony is that I am now working on some silk magic to open a show. I don't mean standing there talking for five minutes while making a little hanky vanish, I mean two magicians in a flash opener to music with a flurry of productions and color changes, leading to a set of climaxes. I am confident that it won't be boring! To me, this seems like a good opener, because it doesn't involve any character development or exposition, it's just a magical air strike to establish our credentials as magicians. Kind of, "You want to see some magic? Here's someone's whole show in five minutes." Then we go on to do some character effects, and in the second act we get to the Ladder of Swords and the escape. So maybe I am addressing the original question by assuming that audiences of today do not have the attention span to listen to long script from the pages of a nineteenth-century magic book. Fortunately, sideshow talkers have always worked on the assumption that people have short attention spans and have to be hooked with something powerfully interesting quickly. Like animal traps! Street performing is also a great way to learn about people's attention spans. As for the Ladder of Swords, there are no notes, it is entirely experiential learning, which is why you need a teacher. Yours, Paul |
