We have done the sawing for quite some time now, and experimented with MANY different presentations. Several times Sue-Anne has sawn me in half then just left me, dead. The audience was EXTREMELY disatisfied and uncomfortable.
The restoration IS anti-climatic but it must be performed. In another version, Sue-Anne sawed me in half and bowed, then our SM entered (as Safety Officer) and explained that if she was to end there it wasn't actually a trick... just murder, and anyone could do that. I like the premise of passing one object through another (chainsaw through human body) and I think that has some interesting possibilities, but I think the real problem with the sawing (and head chopper, nest of boxes, etc) is that once you start, the audience knows exactly what is going to happen. The challenge is to come up with a presentation that is either going to baffle them completely because of the method or surprise them with unexpected things happening along the way. It's a very difficult challenge. Audiences do like to see the sawing, but even when selling the trick to potential bookers I hear "Oh we don't want the old sawing a lady in half, everyone's seen that one." It's very popularity is its problem...

The climax of the double sawing effect definitely lies in the restoration. Cut, separate, weld... ANYONE can do that! The "swapping bottoms" premise, along with the ensuing "mix-up" of parts, is what sells this illusion.
Things are more like they are today than they've ever been before...

Start with a dramatic scene of an abandoned stage of a magic show. On stage, an already separated box. One half has the upper body of the spectator, limp, motionless. The other half the legs. A bloody saw lays on the ground.
Enter our magician; he opens box one and lifts out the upper body of his lifeless assistant, then places it back. He does the same with the lower half of the body. Then, the music starts playing backward as the magician places the two halves together, picks up the saw and pulls it up backwards through the boxed assistant (from bottom to top) the assistant's body comes to life, the box is opened and all is well.

Incredible discussion on this topic..
How bout just doing it coz it'll thrill the kids in the audience and the "kid"in the adults? "Wow, Mom! That lady is cut in half?" A little bit of cheer.. A little smile.. A little bit of Magic.. God knows we need it nowadays! Just my take on it..

Hello everybody,
Sorry to open an old topic, but I stumbled over this due to a search and I decided to share my thoughts on the discussion of the premise between "Cut & Restored Rope" vs "Sawing / Restoration of a Lady". To me there is a difference in both trick ideas : To me the "C & R Rope" is a restoration effect. "Sawing a Woman in Half & Restoring" on the other hand is an invulnerability effect. In the first one you show that you can repare something which has been "broken", in the second that the lady can survive. Just my thought on this one. Oliver. |
