Most of you who know me know that I'm a nut for jazz. Since I was 13, my favorite musician in the whole world has been Maynard Ferguson the legendary trumpet player. I've seen him in concert 15-20 times. He'll be 78 in May and he still tours, putting on 200 shows a year. At less than half his age, I can't imagine doing that many gigs a year. I go to so many of his shows, I've become friends with some of the guys in the band. While I was chatting with his drummer, he asks me to do a trick for him. I do a brief ambitious card/card in wallet. By the time I was done, I had 9 people watching. I was immediately escorted back to Maynard's dressing room and asked to repeat the performance. I've met Maynard several times, but man was I shaking. With half of his band watching, I did the same routine and he laughed like crazy when I unfolded the card and showed it to be his. It really doesn't get much better than that. For 5 minutes tonight, my 2 greatest pleasures in the whole world were combined. Now, if only I can someday play my trombone for John Carney and Tommy Wonder....

Several years ago, I was working for Siemans at Comdex in Las Vegas. After the show, one night, I got to attend a midnight magician's meeting and, sitting down at a table, one of the younger magicians asked me to "do something." So I performed Triumph, the Vrnon handling, but with only a minor variation that I use to shoe the cards mixed - a very simple thing, really.
When I finished the effect, a voice said, from behind me, "I really like your andling of that routine." When I tunred around to thank the man who had spoken, my jaw hit the floor. Standing there with his hand out, he said, "Hi. I'm Lance Burton." I think I managed to squeak: "I know..." and yes, I'm still floating on air from THAT compliment! Lee Darrow, C.H.

Well the funny thing is that I befriended Alan Watson of New Zealand who won the coveted Dragon award in Magic and I was invited to Long Island to a reception honoring him and there were some of my heroes, the true top workers, illusion builders, and other notaries in magic just standing around next to me mingling. And who was I to impress them with anything? But I'm not only a magician. So when the hostess wanted to sing a song I suggested we perform together and I played the piano. And when Dan Garrett pulled out a balloon animal or two we had something in common to do to entertain the visiting magi who were dignitaries with something a little different. So I had something unique to offer these legends too. Never underestimate your unique gifts! It's the same reason the juggler at the magic convention normally gets the standing ovation.
