I am looking for some tips on where to learn some spooky magic tricks. Not anything "evil" or offensive to someone with religious beliefs, but ghostly or scary is good?
Any suggestions? Ideas? Thanks, Beaker |

Mentalism can be pretty spooky.
Pace's "The Web" will make them jump. "Spooky Key". "Kundalini Rising". "Haunted Deck". Don't forget this stuff or this either. |

Glorpy can be fun, check out Eugene Burgers routine for spirit writing.

To learn "spooky" magic I would recommend beginning with
Rick Maue's "Haunted Magic" http://www.deceptionsunlimited.com and/or Black Harts "Black Book" (Black Book I or big black book) available at http://www.blackhart.co.uk You might also take a look at Scrye's Castle Blood Magic Sampler. it is available at http://www.spookymagic.com I have to admit that I have not yet read this book, but the author is a regular here at the Café and a very experienced performer in this area. There is enough material in these readily available and reasonably priced books to keep you busy for quite some time! Dave |

I'd start w/ Rick's book (BOOK OF HAUNTEDMAGICK) for a number of reasons.
It contains utility items that can be used in other venues/with other scripts. The essays are as valuable as the effects. The stuff is all in the "worker" category in that it has been tested w/ real audiences and plays well w/ them. For whatever reason, Bizarre Magick/Mentalism isn't normally "value priced." With Rick's book, you get more for your $35 than you get w/ books on similar subjects that are half the size/thickness but twice the price. And if you're willing to risk $20 to see what I have to say on the subject, head on over to http://www.spookymagic.com and place an order. If you email me and say that you saw this on The Magic Café, I'll cover the postage. Chris P.S.--Thanks to Dave for the kind words! |

There's actually an old magicbook called "Spooky Magic", I had it when I was a kid.
I recently tracked a copy down at Amazon and got it back. Actually, I found that there are two very similar books by that name. It's a bit on the amateurish side, but if you happen to be a beginner looking for some halloween fun, they're okay to start by. This page provides a good list: http://www.misdirections.com/mental.html
Just hanging out with the rest of my fellow dregs.

Is the SPOOKY MAGIC book you're thinking about one that was available through Scholastic book orders? I remember one that was written by Larry Kettlekamp (I think that's correct) that had the "Mummy's finger" stunt and a bunch of other cool things in it that inspired me to start doing "haunted houses" in my bedroom and in our friend's basement.
Funny side note: I used an Altoids tin to do the dead finger gag a few years ago to cheer up a woodcarving counselor who was beginning to take all of the incidental injuries in his area a bit too personally. His response: "You came all the way down from your office just to show me that? You really need to find more work to do." Man, just thinking about that book (and all of the MOVIE MONSTERS books) really takes me back to some fun childhood memories! Chris |

Beaker -- I was looking at your other posts on the forum, and saw that the were mostly in the card magic areas. Rick and Blackhart's books contain effects with both normal and tarot cards. If you are interested in effects using the tarot you might also see if you can find Stephen Minch's Book of Toth. It is out of print, but can be found from time to time. I would also recommend spending some time reading posts in this forum as well as checking out http://www.dragonskull.co.uk
Chris -- Thanks for reminding me of the finger effect. It can be all kinds of fun. I just remembered that I have a special Van Helsing/werewolf Altoids tin. Time to make a little modification. My son and his friends will like that one. Everybody have a great weekend. Dave |
