Hey Mike, you know you can count me in already, I would not miss this for the world.
I seize the occasion to congratulate you once again for the rattle purse... Great reactions yesterday when I performed for a group... I still picture this girl holding my arm TIGHTLY asking over and over again: 'How did they go back to the purse? Will you tell me? How? HOW?' I think it would be a nice idea to perform with it in Philly, and propose it to the attendees. Phedon
...The only easy day is yesterday...

I expect that we will have many of the same people from Seminar 2 at SEMINAR FOUR, plus more! So, be sure to secure your place - seating is limited to the amount of seats in the theatre, and registration will close when all seats are filled.

My coin skills are incredibly not very good. You know how Houdini used to perform some escapes behind a curtained enclosure? Well, I perform nickels to dimes that way; that's just how bad I am with coins.
My question is, would I benefit from the coin seminar or would I be too overwhelmed? |

Magicsqaure, We honestly can't tell you if it would be overwhelming for you or not! What we can tell you is that there is something for everyone in this seminar! If you truly know your limitations, and put focus on what you can do...the only thing you'll be overwhelmed by is the enjoyment you'll have!

Our Seminar caters to anyone with a basic knowledge of coin magic. Coin magic is about delicacy and timing, no hard finger twisting moves. So, there is certainly material for the beginnier as well as the seasoned performer. Beginners will benefit most by the TWO HOUR hands on workshop we do when we break up the group into four smaller breakout groups. Our Special guest will be revealed on Monday, he has a popular DVD out now, and grew up in the New York area! He is the perfect person to follow our previous special guests, Gallo, Harbottle, and Kam! Who is it? hmmmmm, wait till Monday, but until then you can check out our website at http://www.newyorkcoinmagic.net to register, to see a video montage from our second Seminar, and pictures for our last Seminar. Plus, you can check out our new DVD on COINS ACROSS!

But, I really wanted to see the New York coin guys perform live so I went. This is probably the only way you will get to see Geoff Latta do his trick with three coins right in front of your face. This is probably the only way you'll get to see Mike Gallo do the coins across under glass close enough to see each coin visibly vanish. This is probably the only way to see Roth do the tuning fork close enough that you see and hear everything. And, this is probably the only way you'll get to see Rubenstein do his ROPS move close enough to really appreciate the visual burn it creates. You see, these guys are phenomenal close up workers and these seminars keep the group small enough that you can actually be close up for the performances. That's why I went and for that alone it was worth it to me. My concern was similar to yours but rather than being too new I felt I was too well studied. I had lived with Buckley's coin book, Bobo's coin book, Kaufman's coin book and Roth's coin book for years so I thought I wouldn't get anything new. To a certain extent, I was correct and I saw material with which I was already familiar. However, I was pleasantly surprised by some new material in the lecture notes which was excellent. Beyond that I received something even more valuable, personal instruction and the chance to see the way things are supposed to look. This is valuable at any skill level. At your level, you'll likely pick up the basic technique while at my level I learned subtleties and minor variations on moves I had done for years. Which brings me to another point. A lot of people think coin magic is difficult and, to a certain extent it is. However, it becomes a lot easier to learn from people who really understand what it is they are trying to teach. Consequently, as I mentioned in another thread regarding the coin seminars, this is probably one of the best methods for a beginner to get a good start. Many of the techniques taught are relatively easy to pick up and once you have a good understanding of the techniques perfecting them is only a matter of practice. Many times I've wasted a lot of time trying to perfect something because I didn't clearly understand what I was trying to do and with personal instruction you can avoid that. Some of the routines are difficult but many are relatively easy. The great thing about most of the routines taught in the seminar is that they are designed to make the execution as smooth and simple as possible. What does that mean? It means that even the routines that have difficult sleights are easier to perform because they are well constructed to give extra cover when needed. Whatever your level, if you want to get something out of the seminar then do a little research. Get access to as much coin material, especially material by these guys, as you can. Kaufman's Coin Magic, Expert Coin Magic, Richard's Almanac, and Apocolypse should have a lot of material and there's a myriad of videos by Roth and Rubenstein. Then take notes on what interests you and come prepared to ask about those techniques. As a beginner, I'd ask to learn the finger palm, classic palm, down's palm, shuttle pass, the retention vanish, the han ping chien and spellbound moves because they are great foundations, the guys are experts and in a short period of time they can teach you the basics. Actually, I'd look in Bobo's Modern Coin Magic and start playing with this stuff before hand so you can ask specific questions about the techniques. Also, pay attention to the performances and enjoy them but also try to remember how they looked and how they feel as you watch them. This will give you a great point of reference for when you are practicing on your own. Seeing a routine done live makes learning it much easier than learning it from a description in a book. If you don't have a serious interest in coin magic then don't go, you won't get your money's worth. However, if you want to become a serious practitioner of coin magic one of these seminars is a great place to start. It can save a lot of time and wasted effort in the future. I don't mean to be pushing you to go because if you don't use the seminar properly it could turn into a waste of time and money. However, if you come well prepared and then follow up with diligent practice it will greatly shorten the time it takes to become proficient. You'll have to decide whether or not that's what you want. In response to your PMs, the subjects may vary, so we never put down an official schedule, but we will do a lot of copper silver, productions, penetrations, and much, much more. Of course, we go with the flow of the questions and interests of the group. And of course, the usual exclusive unpublished stuff to keep you one step ahead of your peers! Feel free to continue to PM me with any of your questions, or just post them here as I am sure others will be able to benefit by them.
