I work so much that my closeup case and my jacket, as well as my whole stand up show with sound and backdrop (most of the time), stays in the back of my van so there is no need for an emergency pack.

Deck of cards and elastic bands in my car.
Always on my person are a few quarters and other change, a pen, bills, handkerchief, "2$ Window", duplicate house key, cigarettes, and lighter. A member named snap started a topic about what you would put in an Altoids tin here: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=52 Reading over these old posts, I'd have to change my choices. a quarter [ quarter-size Mexican copper coin. "Double X" [ a wad of poster putty "Holey Moley" length of IT swami pencil stub elastics around the tin shoelace around the tin, too false knot used w/ shoelace TT, or D'Lite that could act as a TT Altoids The thimbles in my other post were a bit too much. Much of what I might need (cards, paper, finger rings, etc) can usually be borrowed. When I performed closeup more often, I usually had a shoulder pouch in my vehicle with quite a bit of backup stuff. Posted: Sep 13, 2007 6:21pm James, The Altoids tin I have measures 2 1/4 inches x 3 3/4 inches and is about 3/4 inch deep. Reminder to myself, I really need to get a metric ruler. |

Thanks, Jaz. With the measurement you have given, I can now visualise what they look like.

A while back I wrote an article on Magician's Emergency Kits for Visions.
Here's a link. http://www.online-visions.com/realmagic/0402dan.html I also keep a small close up kit within my stand up case.

Great article Dan,thank you!
I was asked to perform at a friends house last night, I wasn't really "prepared". I ended up doing a 45 minute routine with what I had on me. I was actually surprised at how it all flowed together, everything I had on me were things that I have been practicing lately while on breaks at work as well as a few items that I always carry on me. The items I used were- A sponge ball & s*n*da gimmick A T.T. & rainbow streamer Copper, Silver Brass A deck of cards with a duplicate in it A small hypno disk that I made out of a poker chip Free Will This is now my emergency case act. This has been praying on my mind for a week now. Thanks a lot guys! Way to keep me up at night.
So, anyway, here goes. . . Cards don't fit, so I'm taking a regular deck in another pocket. In the tin: 1 nickel and 1 dime for Tomoyuki Takahashi's Fading Coin several sheets of flash paper in a small black folder 1 box of wooden matches 1 small decorative stone (about 1 inch in diameter. I use it to burn flash paper) a smaller tin (altoids make very small tins for their breath strips) with black eye shadow (this and the three above are for ashes to palm but can used for several other things as well) 1 gimmicked business card and a double headed quarter (for my version of Positive/Negative) 2 safety pins (1 gimmicked ala Slydini) 1 PK ring for any number of things (I may leave this out though) 2 rubber bands (#19) 4 half dollars and a Burger coin clip 24" of cotton string I have at least 10 solid effects with this set up. With the deck of cards, the possibilities are endless (which may or may not be a good thing). Mark

I've been using an old, small cigarcase for some time, of an old brand called "hovnarr", wich in swedish means jester. I think it's about the same size as the altoids tin. I have made small compartments for the items, after reading a book about old magic-kits a fell in love with the tidyness of compartments. It contains:
A deck of red cards with a blue card and a doubble-back Thumbtip with a bill a red and a black silk Chocolate coin and a folding coin Rubber bands, wax, putty (is that what you call it?), double-sided tape, rubber bands and invisible thread. Iv'e been thinking about getting rid of the silks, I hardly ever use them. Has anyone heard of Edward Victor's "20 Tricks in a Matchbox"? I wonder what was in it. Pardon my spelling. |

If you are know for doing something it is always a great idea to carry it in your car, that way you are always ready, but more importantly you have a spare!

I don't know what Victor's 20 tricks were, but I've tried the 'matchbox challenge' and it's pretty tough. I managed to get in my dime/penny, a safety pin with some beads, a s***i w****r, and a few other tiny items that I can't remember. All told, it got me quite a few effects, but it wasn't real handy. Too small, and too much digging around required to retrieve the right item.

I always carry a 'spares" kit on the car. Mostly parts for the show, but it includes spare tech stuff ( cables, etc) too
