Hi all!
My summer is looking fairly empty at the moment, so I feel like purchasing a few books to study from when I have spare time. My only problem is that I don't know where to go next... So far, I have: Mark Wilson's Complete Course RRTCM Expert at the Card Table Expert Card Technique Jay Sankey's Anytime, Anywhere Daniel Garcia Project And many of the Ellusionist DVDs. So my question is, where to next? I've been looking at Card College, Tarbell's Course, and Art of Astonishment. Your thoughts? Thanks in advance. -Gabe P.S. I'd most like to focus on card magic. |

Where do you want to go bigger or smaller, classic or off beat?
Card College - Hardcore card utilities, great reference for jamming with cards Tarbell - how everything in magic pre 1973 (and most afterwards) is done and how to make it. Not strong on cards though. Art of Astonishment - tons of quirky tricks mostly cards and coins ( I think it helps to have classic moves down before learning Harris stuff) J.B.Bobo's Modern Coin Magic does seem to be missing from your list. If you want to get into coins and small objects, for $10 U.S. it's a must read.

Tarbell is an excellent choice. It will give you a great grounding in magic for any venue you may decide to perform in. It also has great essays on a number of different topics. You will not be disappointed.

Maybe also consider working on showmanship.

A novice't reflection: I like watching my audience's jaws drop, but sadly in reality I'm just too busy to enjoy it.

If you are going to focus on card magic then don't buy Tarbell. Buy Tarbell because you want to become an excellent magician.
As for DVD's (most of the books I can think of has been mentioned) Gambling effetcs - Sal Piacente lecture notes. Darwin Ortiz and Leonard Green (think I misspelled his name it may be Leonart) for some excellent card magic. The difficulty level is quite high but you will learn a lot and have tons of things to practise. Jeff McBride also has a new DVD I think it is called Xtreme Beginnerz and I have heard it has some nice sleights on it that you can perform. |

John Bannon's "Dear Mr. Fantasy" is a great book.
Mike Maxwell's "The Classic Magic of Larry Jennings" is a fantastic book. Roberto Giobbi's "Card College" series would be my next "must have". Work on what you already have absorbed from the first list of references (after first acquiring the C.C. series first) is the best advice I can give! :hypnodisk: KRaZy4kardz
